Who Really Hates Our Freedom

Reflections on the Connecticut Primary

paul angelo
It is amazing just how out of touch, and at times, all out crazy the right wing can be. On the heels of pragmatic progressive Ned Lamont's primary victory, "conservative" media doofuses have carried over their dire predictions of the demise of the Democratic Party. How dare Connecticut Democrats attempt to hold a senator to account and expect that person to represent their opinion!!

But seriously, the commentary of Washington elites and right-wing whacko's regarding the Connecticut Democratic primary ties in to a theme of my current writing-the out-of-touch nature of right-wingers. Amazingly, all the talking heads of the media establishment have an opinion about a primary race from, of all states, Connecticut. One of the most inexplicable and prevalent is that which suggests that Connecticut Democrats ouster of Joe Lieberman will somehow harm the Democratic Party because left-wing loonies have seized control. Well I hate to reiterate what others have been saying but-news flash morons-Ned Lamont's anti Iraq occupation position is the mainstream opinion in this country!! The latest poll shows some 60% of Americans oppose the Iraq occupation and desire a timetable for withdrawal.

Also, Ned Lamont's stance on other issues is nowhere near extreme or rigidly ideological at all. On healthcare Lamont advocates an employer mandated universal healthcare system rather than a "single payer" system (although he claims he would like to eventually get there. On trade, Lamont doesn't call for a complete dismantlement of "free-trade"-in fact he believes any trade agreement we enter into should have labor standards written in them to allow American workers to compete with those in China for instance. Lamont's statement in support of Israel is probably the best proof that Lamont is no rabid left-winger-if there is such a thing. Being no Palestinian flag waver, Ned's opinion on Israel is that we must hold Israel's security as a priority, while at the same time holding the Bush administration accountable for not brokering a solution to the situation in Lebanon as well as the larger Israeli/Palestinian conflict. So Lamont falls somewhere between liberals and progressives-at least according to my laymen analysis.

Typically, pundits and politicians from the right are already suggesting that the Lieberman loss demonstrates that Democrats aren't serious about national security. A good example among many comes from big mouth Republican congressman from NY Peter King. King said of Lieberman; "Unlike the left wing of his party, Joe Lieberman stands for a strong national defense. The attacks against him have been disgraceful." Ya know-King is right. Speaking as a member of the so-called "left wing", I have to say that there is nothing I'd like more than to weaken national security and hopefully be blown up some day. But seriously, I wonder if Rep. King could articulate for us how exactly occupying Iraq, building permanent bases against the wishes of Iraqi's, killing American's and Iraqi's by the thousand, torturing people regardless of guilt or innocence and bleeding our own American resources dry is in our "national security" interests? Oh yeah, I forgot - we're fighting them over there rather than over here-How about that for right-wing morality?-"Dear Iraq, We have decided to fight a "war" against a "tactic" called terror in your country rather than ours, based on the false pretext that you possess WMD. Many thousands of your people will die and we will torture, kill, rape, humiliate and allow our corporations to profit from the "rebuilding" while you remain unemployed. For all our work we will expect much praise and gratitude for your "liberation"-Sincerely Yours, George W. Bush". Does anyone realize how ridiculous this sounds? Apparently, Connecticut Democrats-myself included, after a last minute switch from being an independent-do see the absurdity and have voted for change.

But the most despicable, nonsensical and telling comments come from none other than Dick Dark Side Cheney. Cheney commented yesterday that the Connecticut Democrats choice of Ned Lamont over Joe Lieberman "might encourage the Al-Qaeda types" who want to "break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task." What the f@$*!!!!??? Not that I should be shocked by anything Cheney says or does anymore, but that one is a doozie and is a perfect illustration of the Bush administration cabal's distaste for democracy. For any politician to suggest that the American people in Connecticut or elsewhere are encouraging terrorists to attack them simply by exercising their right to ouster an out of touch politician from office is unforgivable. Our vote is the foundation of our representative democratic republic system for Gods sake!! But I guess I shouldn't be surprised given the Bush cabal's track record of contempt for American values. Lets take count-the Bush cabal opposes a free press; they believe the president is above the law and can pick and choose which laws treaties and Constitutional amendments he wishes to follow; they believe that torture should be American policy-and the list goes on and on. Allow me to dream for a second that come this November, the American people will have the nerve-in spite of Dark Side Dick's dire warnings of terrorist attack and in the spirit of the Connecticut primary-to vote in a Democratic majority. Only then can the proverbial poop be allowed to hit the fan on these anti-democratic douche bags.

  • Right wing suggests demise of Democratic Party as "left-wing" loonies take control.
  • Ned Lamonts stance is nowhere near extreme--in fact its among the mainstream.
  • Dick Dark SIde Cheney is an ass!!!

I wonder what it would take for the bush admin to be held accountable by Manda and SL...the sad part of it is, there is nothing he can do wrong in their eyes as long as he fights gay marriage and pro-choice supporters. It doesn't matter how many innocent Iraqi civilians die, they are just infidels, don't ya know..

Let's just do a little historical consideration here: Slavery: The conservatives wanted it, the liberals tried to abolish it. Civil Rights: The liberals fought for it, the conservatives fought against it. Women's right to vote: The liberals fought for it, the conservatives kept it down until the freaking 20th century (and after the Soviet Union granted it, I might add). Vietnam War: The liberals tried to end it, the conservative politicians like Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld supported it, but not to the point of enlisting. Yes, you conservatives have a proud history.

For the people who are talking as if they know anything about a liberal media, they are thinking of a world that existed about fifteen to twenty years ago, before media conglomeration changed everything. As a former Communications Lawyer, I can't begin to tell you the drastic changes in media that have occured in a very short period of time (all ushered in, by the way, by Bill Clinton's appeasement to media companies). I'm sorry that your article seems to have brought out every wing-nut at AC.

Ditto Mr. Angelo, if you're not outraged by this administration, you're not paying attention.

Definitions: Conservative: unbending, narrowminded pseudo-christian, value distorter. Liberal: open minded, compassionate but firm, able to adapt. In fact, Jesus was a liberal who was persecuted by the conservative community of his time.

It will be interesting to hear the rationalizations when Lieberman wins as an independent.
