Who Should Use Repellents and When

Nearly everyone has had to use repellents to keep off bugs and animals from unwanted locations and situations. Repellents are designed to keep pests such as bugs, rodents and other animals away from humans and the areas they inhabit. These pests are often more than just merely annoying, and can cause irreparable damage to structured dwellings like houses, fibers such as clothing and can even cause serious health problems through bites, feces and other incidental components.

While not every pets issue calls for a heavy chemical repellent assault, you may encounter a situation where the problem becomes overwhelming and threatens your health, your way of life or your investment in a home, land or other area. In this case, you will need to find a repellent that not only rids your environment of pests, but also keeps them away in the long term.

There are a number of options when considering a repellent, depending on how severe you want to get. Homemade repellents are probably the mildest, followed by organic methods. Chemical repellent are probably the most effective for taking care of a pest problem, however, these should always be used with extreme caution.

There are repellents that are designed to be used on an as-needed basis, such as skin sprays for outdoor events and activities. These are best when used sparingly and with caution as there are a number of potentially devastating health problems that can be induced by prolonged exposure or over-use.

Some repellents are designed for use over a long period of time and are applied directly to the pest situation with little or no contact for humans. They can be either chemically-based or organic. Chemical repellents are typically very potent and should be used in areas that humans will not usually frequent. Chemical repellents are available for all types of pest infestation such as rodents, insects and animals. While there is usually an organic counterpart to chemical repellents, they are not generally as effective and usually have to be reapplied very frequently.

When a pest problem gets to the point where it's no longer a nuisance, but a threat, chemical repellents work best and are fastest. However, the best method for repelling pests is prevention. Take account of your home or other situation and see if there is any potential for infestation of any kind. From there, take steps to protect yourself before things get out of hand.
