Who Should Have to "take a Good Ass Chewing" at Their Job?

United States Court of Appeals -UPS Vs. Ms. Crone

Sheri Taylor
This case concerned me for a couple of reasons. First: she had a history of crying before when dispatchers yelled at her. This is an act is an unprofessionally way to handle yourself in the workplace. If the drivers had yelled at her to a point in the past that made her cry, she should have written a formal complaint about the verbal abuse she had to take in the workplace. No one should have to take verbal abuse in the workplace. If someone has a problem there should be a proper chain of command to complain about it. If the dispatcher had a problem with Ms. Crone, the dispatcher should have made a complaint. Furthermore, these are Union Workers and there are ways to handle grievances' without yelling at dispatchers. If I were Ms. Crone's attorney, I would have taken a different approach to the whole case based on the evidence I have read.

Based on the case I have read, I don't believe Ms. Crone gave sufficient evidence that she was discriminated against for being female, or being too sensitive (men can be sensitive too!) I believe that the whole situation between the union drivers, the supervisor and Ms. Crone was handled poorly and find it hard to believe that the UPS doesn't have a better way of handling these types of situations.

The questions I have are why would someone in a supervisor position need to be able to take yelling or "a good ass chewing" I think this was a poor choice of words by Ms. Crone's supervisor, and am curious as to what disciplinary action he received for that. What kind of job requires the ability to "take a good ass chewing". Have you ever seen on anyone's resume with a Skill "Can take a good ass chewing". What is wrong with this picture?

Maybe I am just hung up on the total lack of professionalism, I expect more from UPS. With a company as large as UPS there has to be checks and balances. Furthermore, procedures should in place so that yelling and ass chewing is not part of the equation.

My next question I have is, do the union truck drivers treat the men in similar positions of Ms. Crone the same way? Or is this something they think because she is a women they can bully her?

What bothers me most is Ms. Crone said "Ms. Crone also admitted that she has demonstrated some difficulty dealing with confrontational situations in the past and on at least one occasion was close to tears when a truck driver was confrontational with her as a dispatcher. Though Ms. Crone believes she has overcome or outgrown those difficulties," Why should anyone in any position have to be able to "take a good ass chewing" for no apparent reason except for the fact that the union drivers get the rocks off being confrontational.
