Who Do You Need to Tip at a Restaurant?

WRITER
In the restaurant and hospitality industries many workers earn majority of their income on tips. However, there are numerous people that already make a certain wage or salary. These employees do not need to rely on tips to obtain a steady paycheck. Who should we tip? Who should we not tip? Those are commonly asked questions from consumers. To have the knowledge will make your visit more comfortable.

There are two major employees that make majority of their money off tips. That will be the servers and the bartenders. However, the bartenders usually make a higher hourly rate and they do get the servers tip out at the end of the night. Most bartenders make around $4.00 an hour and up. The server only makes $2.13 an hour and has to tip out to other employees. It does seem like the servers are getting the shorter end of the stick.

The bus person and host person makes a steady hourly wage. Their pay may be around $4.00 and hour but with the tip share many average $7.00-$10.00 an hour. Some restaurants do not give them tip share but they will be compensated in their wages. I do not recommend the need the tip these employees. They do get a decent wage to do a specific job.

Many restaurants will have carry outs. These servers are responsible on packaging your orders. The servers working carry out makes more than $2.13 an hour. Their pay may average around $7.00 an hour. It is fantastic to tip the carry out server; however, I do not recommend tipping the standard 15%. They do not have to tip out at the end of the night. Any gratuity will be happly taken.

The servers at buffets are still providing service for tips. The 15% still applies to them as well. These servers usually only make $2.13 an hour. Remember the price at a buffet are a lot cheaper so even the 15% will be greatly accepted. They are bringing you drinks and cleaning your plates throughout your meal. The servers usually do not have to tip out at the end of the night and are able to keep all the tips earned. Since it is not a full service restaurant they will usually have a enormous amount of tables.

The employees that make a certain wage will be the cooks. You will never have to tip the cooks. Since most restaurants follow the "Tip Out" procedure when you tip the server you are actually tipping everyone in the entire building. The simple fact is that there is no need to tip other than the servers and bartenders. When you tip them that small percentage will go to the others at the end of the night.

we never get anything at the bar- but once in awhile we have such a great meal we have to tip the chef... there is this place in Coram... and when this chef is there he seriously makes the best Alfredo I have ever had in my entire life... I always make sure to tip him...

The servers we always over tip as well. However I will have to remember to tip bartenders from now on, I dont drink often.... at all.... so I never even thought to tip. Im a schmuck. lol. Great tips though.... ; )

My hubby and I always debate this topic. I like to give a little more (25%) when the wait person is exceptionally friendly and fills up our drinks without us asking, etc. It is so hard to find a great wait person any more. Hubby says it should be expected with a 20% tip but I say - reward the good work ethic and customer service with a little bonus just like any other job performance. Great topic.
