Who is Vera Baker?

As the nation wakes up on May Day to allegations that its President, Barack Obama, is having an affair with a sexy thirty five year old aide, many are asking that very question.

There have been whispers about Vera Baker and Barack Obama for quite some time now. Until now, however, they seem to have been merely unsubstantiated rumors. But as the National Enquirer in the United States and Le Matin in Switzerland report that a tape could exist of the President and Baker entering a hotel room together and that emails may have been found between the two, the notion of an Obama and Baker affair seems to be gaining credibility.

Similar to how Rachel Uchitel and Rielle Hunter were unknown prior to stories that broke involving them with famous men (Tiger Woods and John Edwards respectively), Vera Baker is hardly a household name. In fact, beyond the beltway in Washington (and perhaps even inside it), Vera Baker is a virtual unknown.

Vera Baker is about to lose her anonymity, however.

Baker is a fundraiser who has worked closely with Barack Obama on both his senatorial as well as his presidential campaigns. She was his finance director for his 2004 Illinois senate campaign. In 2000, she co-founded Baker, Wambu & Associates.

Baker, Wambu & Associates has since shut down and what exactly Vera Baker has been doing in the intervening years is not clear. Rumors have existed in the not too distant past that Vera Baker was targeted by the President's wife, Michelle Obama and somehow was dispatched to Martinique.

What does seem particularly odd about the Vera Baker story is how vital she became to a senator's fund raising efforts at a very young age and how since then nobody seems to really know what she has been doing or what businesses she's been involved in.

Generally, when somebody in his or her late twenties is able to rise to the position of Finance Director for a successful senate campaign, he or she is able to parlay that into a great career path.

While the fact that, at least publicly, nobody is sure what Vera Baker has been up to over the past several years is not proof of anything, as the Barack Obama and Vera White story grows, more and more people will wonder who is Vera Baker. And as they wonder, if they do not get answers, the speculation over the alleged Obama and Baker affair will only snowball.
