#1 "Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me." Seymour Miller & Jill Jackson
If you desire peace on earth, learning to deal with the irritations and frustrations that we all face everyday, is a good place to begin. Every minute you are angry is 60 seconds when you could be happy. Pick your anger! Look at it this way: here comes that tsunami wave, do you want your last moments on earth to be filled with your ranting and raving about little things? The children will quiet down, the neighbors will turn off the music. Eventually. Take a deep breath and wait it out. If you want peace on earth, think of this quote:
#2 "First keep the peace within yourself, then you can also bring peace to others." Thomas A. Kempis
The Dutch have an expression:
#3 "It is better to keep peace than to make peace."
Attitudes are contagious. What happens when someone yells at you? Usually "a word causing pain, makes anger come up" (Proverbs 15:1, Bible). If we can learn that "an answer when mild turns away rage", resonding quietly when our peace is disrupted by angy words, we just might create an attitude worth spreading. Buddha pointed out:
#4 "Better than a thousand hollow words is one word that brings peace."
Endeavor to "keep your words tender and sweet, for tomorrow, you may have to eat them" is an expression worth listening to! But, "who wants peace on earth?", you might ask. Here are two quotes that will tell you why world peace is a good aspiration:
#5 "Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind" John F. Kennedy
#6 "Either war is obsolete or men are." R. Buckminster Fuller
I do not know about you, but I have enjoyed my time on earth. I would like the planet to be around for my grandchildren's grandchildren to enjoy. Think about a time you lost your temper over some minor incident and reacted in anger. World leaders are only human, a lost temper could cause one of them to launch a nuclear attack that could wipe out all civilization. Wars and fighting have been around since the beginning of earth's recorded time. Some wars have brought about positive changes. However, they also create an attitude of hatred and desire for revenge in future generations. Now that we are living in the technology age where, with the click of a mouse, we can instantly communicate with people across the globe, is it not time to understand, we can resolve differences without killing and war?
#7 Ben Franklin said, "There was never a good war or a bad peace."
#8 Mahatma Gandhi believed "It is possible to live in peace."
Many people have offered advice on how we can achieve peace on earth. Here are some top-notch quotes:
#9 "Peace cannot be achieved through violence, it can only be attained through understanding." Ralph Waldo Emerson
#10 "If they want peace, nations should avoid the pin-pricks that precede cannon shots." Napoleon Bonaparte
#11 "Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding." Albert Einstein
#12 "If there is to be peace between neighbors, there must be peace in the home.If there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart. Lao Tzu
#13 "We look forward to the time when the Power of Love will replace the Love of Power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace." William Gladstone
#14 "We will not build a peaceful world by following a negative path." Martin Luther King, Jr.
#15 "You can't separate peace from freedom because no one can be at peace unless he has his freedom." Malcolm X
#16 "Peace is the respect for the rights of others." (translated from, "El respeto al derecho ajeno es la paz.") Benito Juarez
The neighbor that is blaring the music; the parent that allows children to run wild in restaurants that do not normally cater to children's parties like Chuck E Cheese does; the rude driver; persons who restrict freedom, and others are not respecting the rights of their neighbors on earth. Again, we must as, Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world."
Because,
#17 "Peace is the only battle worth waging." Albert Camus
And:
#18 "An eye for eye only ends up making the whole world blind." Mahatma Gandhi
Truly:
#19 "All we are saying is give peace a chance." John Lennon
Who wants peace on earth? I do.

An excellent piece about peace. I enjoyed.
I think sometimes people have to see things that are bigger than themselves to understand why they should stop doing what they do to create negativity. A woman I work with said she goes to a shelter to feed the homeless on Thanksgiving every year because it humbles her. The events like the Jena 6 and my issues with NMU humble me. When I want to gripe about stuff that I'm mad about at the moment, I think back to things that are so much bigger. I'm sure Mychal Bell would love to have the opportunity to complain about the annoying co-worker who talks about her cat like a child or how terrible Wells/State Street traffic is. There are bigger things in the world. I think that's what makes me less of a complainer. When I hear others complain, unless I really like them, I usually tune them out.
Great article. Peace does begin at home doesn't it?
