Who was Jesus? Matthew Chapter 1 verse 1 state: "The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham."[1]. Jesus is a direct descendent of Abraham who was the father of David, also known as King David. Although, Joseph was not Jesus' biological father, because God was, Jesus is still considered a direct descendent of Abraham through the bloodline of Joseph. Joseph and Mary were to be married, but Mary was found to be pregnant, by the Holy Spirit, before her and Joseph married. Now, Joseph and Mary were informed by an angel what had happened, so that Joseph would have no reason to be angry with Mary. Joseph and Mary did not wed until after Jesus was born, so Joseph being declared Jesus' earthly father is how we come to the conclusion of the genealogy of Jesus to be a direct descendent of Abraham father of King David. Since Jesus is the descendent of King David, it puts Him in position to be able to be King himself here on earth, and Since Jesus' biological Father is the Holy Spirit, who is God, it puts him in position to be King of Heaven. Which in turn with all of these things in place it allow Jesus to be King of Kings all of Heaven and Earth.
Why was Jesus sent to earth? Man needed Jesus as their Savior, but why did man need Jesus as their Savior? The answer to this question is a little more detailed. Man, from the very beginning, just could not seem to get it right. In Genesis we find that God gave Adam and Eve free reign over the entire garden at Eden, except for one tree, but look what happened here. The devil, in the form of a snake, manipulated Eve into eating from the tree God had told her not to, and Adam was just as guilty because he was with her and did nothing to stop her, then ate of the same tree himself.[2] As you can see, sin has been around since the beginning, even when the first man and woman was created they were given a choice and failed to obey. Therefore, you can see why man[3] needed a savior then and why man needs a savior now. Without Jesus as a savior there would be no hope, at all, for us as human beings here on this earth, because we would surely perish in the fiery pits of hell without this Savior we know as Jesus.
What was Jesus' purpose here on this earth? Well, the first answer to this question has already been answered in the previous paragraph, but Jesus had more than just one reason for being here on earth. Yes, Jesus' main purpose for being on this earth was to become a Savior for each and every one of us, but he was also here to teach people how to live and treat one another. Jesus taught some very important lessons throughout his life, such as, how to pray, resist temptation, and how to love. Jesus was not only sent to die on a cross for you and me, but to teach us how to live out our lives. If we are to proclaim Jesus as our Lord and Savior, should we also want to live how He lived his life? I know I do. Of all the lessons Jesus taught us, prayer would have to be the one I consider most valuable. I will explain, without prayer there would not be any way for us to speak to God. How would we ask for forgiveness, how then would salvation be possible, how could we ask for help for the sick, and how would we be able to give thanks. When Jesus came to this earth, he not only came to die for all of us, but to teach us how to live out our lives and how to pray. With all these teachings in place and Jesus' death on the cross it makes it possible for salvation. You can see that Jesus came to this earth to teach us how to live, how to pray, and to die for our sins, so that you and me can be saved by faith and faith alone and know how God wants us to live out our lives and be able to speak directly to God through prayer.
I hope that this article has helped you to see the answers to who was Jesus, why was Jesus sent to earth, and what was Jesus' purpose here? As you can see there are many reasons why Jesus was on the earth and what his purpose here was, but who Jesus was then and who Jesus is now is pretty clear, He is our Savior. Jesus is the only way for you and me to enter into Heaven. So, I will say again that Jesus is the son of God who was sent to this earth by God as a Savior for all mankind.
