Who was Madeline Gutkowski?

Lisa Stevens
On the surface the scene the hiker found in the Franconia National Forest on May 1st, 2004 was gruesome, but looked pretty easy to solve. Two bodies found off a trail, a note on the female victims car nearby indicating to the male victims family the deaths were suicide's and identification found on the bodies to indicate who they were. But for one of the victims her real identity was only the beginning of a mystery that still plagues the New Hampshire State Police nearly 6 years later.

Very little is actually known about Madeline Gutkowski, or Dalaina Terra Garren, except with the small amounts of identification found with her body. She had an Oregon Drivers License with a Portland address and the name Dalaina Terra Garren on it. She also had a passport listing Illinois as her place of birth. When the State Police ran her fingerprints they returned with the name Madeline Gutkowski. Police now believe Madeline Gutkowski may have been an alias. They aren't ruling out the possibility both names are fake.

Police do know both Madeline and her boyfriend died on or around April 16th, 2004 and they both died of neck wounds, though they don't know if they were self-inflicted or not.

The family of Madeline's boyfriend immediately claimed his body, but they had never seen Gutkowski before, or even knew she existed. When Investigators begin piecing Madeline's life together in the hopes of finding her relatives they were met with immediate dead ends and false leads. The address in Portland, Oregon never panned out and it appeared she had been traveling from one end of the country to the other and it's unknown where her family actually is, or if they even know she's missing, or dead.

What started out for New Hampshire State Police as a simple case of picking up the phone and notifying a long lost relative of the unfortunate news has after 6 years turned into a deep mystery of who Madeline Gutkowski and Dalaina Garren really was.

Several online sleuths have been able to track down the name Madeline Gutkowski over the years in places such as Nevada and California, so hopefully someone remembers her like a former spouse or friend who wonders what happened to her.

But maybe it was more than that, maybe Madeline was running from something in her past or maybe she has no one left in this world to claim her. Or maybe Madeline just wanted to remain as anonymous in death as she appears to have in life.

According to her passport she was born on 9/9/1946 and was 57 years old when she died. She was 5' 7" and weighed 240 pounds. She had Brown hair and her ears were pierced with elaborate and distinctive earrings. Her upper right central incisor was also medically chipped, meaning she had had some proper dental work done.

She was wearing a Neutral color, long sleeve "Great Northwest" brand Henley top with a jeweled pin on the collar and brown corduroy pants. She also wore a bright blue "Gallery Woman" brand zippered coat, white "Saucony" brand athletic shoes, white "Nike" socks and a white knit cap. Along with the elaborate earrings she was also wearing a cloth necklace with metal amulet, an "Anne Klein" wristwatch, three white metal rings with black stones and one white metal ring with blue stone.
