Who is Wearing Promise Rings in Hollywood

In a time when TV and movies depict teenagers sleeping around as if it were the norm, it's refreshing to see that there are some celebrities who are willing to stand up and say that they don't agree that casual sex is okay. In fact, some young teen stars are causing quite a buzz with something that seems to be far more than just the latest teenage trend. I'm talking about promise rings, of course.

A promise ring is used as a symbol of a vow to remain sexually pure. Usually a promise ring is given to a pre-teen or teenager by his or her parents. In some cases, a teenager may decide to wear the ring on their own as a symbol of the commitment they're making before God. In fact, promise rings are strongly encouraged in many evangelical churches among Christian youth groups.

I'm sure it's not easy to make such a bold statement, especially when in some social circles being the last one to lose your virginity is not a place where you want to be. And it seems to me that among celebrities it would be an even tough decision to make since there are watching eyes everywhere.

Still, there is a small and growing group of teenage celebrities who wear their promise rings proudly and are not ashamed to announce that they vow to not have sex until they are married. And with the recent spotlight shed on promise rings at this year's VMA's, their popularity has only grown.

So just who in Hollywood is wearing a promise ring these days? Well, Disney Channel's biggest star, Miley Cyrus, from Hannah Montana has stated on her YouTube show, The Miley and Mandy Show, that she wears one.

Best friends, Demi Lovato of Camp Rock fame and Selena Gomez from Wizards of Waverly Place bother wear promise rings as well and are proud to show them off.

All three of the Jonas Brothers, Kevin, Nick and Joe Jonas, wear promise rings as well. It was the Jonas Brothers who took a hit from comedian, Russell Brand, who hosted the VMA's, about the fact that they wear promise rings.

And it was American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, who also proudly wears a promise ring, who defended the Jonas Brothers for wearing their promise rings by saying that, "not every boy or girl wants to be a slut".

So should we expect to see a surge in teens wearing promise rings now that so many high-profile teenage celebrities are sporting them? Perhaps, but this is one trend that parents can be happy to have their teens be a part of.

I think this is great. That jerk on the VMA's really made me mad when he made fun of them.
