Who is Westboro Baptist Church?

Where Did it Come From? Why Aren't We Praying for Them?

C. A. Cope
The Westboro Baptist Church has been in the news for some time now and I can't figure out why. They do nothing but spread hate, especially against the gay community, and don't even have their facts right when they are spewing out their filth.

My bible, in the book of Revelation, says that my Jesus will return for his people (the rapture), then after a time to give all people a chance to accept Him as their savior, he will then judge us. This so-called church is trying to say that dying soldiers in our (the United States) military is God's wrath coming down on America for our acceptance of gay relationships and that these soldiers are now in hell. Jesus has not come back to judge us yet so how can anyone, let alone a soldier whether gay or not be in hell? Only Jesus has the book of life and he hasn't opened the book to judge yet.

They say God hates fags (their words) and quote Romans 1 as their justification for their beliefs but I urge you to read all of Romans. You will see that God sent Jesus because we all sin and we all fall short of God's glory and it is not through our deeds that we are saved but through our belief in Jesus that saves us. Had this so-called church read all of Romans instead of just picking out the parts they want to help in their hate venture they would have seen this message.

Revelation also says that many will be blind to what is going on around them while others see clearly. I see that God's message to us it to love our neighbors, not try to be God and judge their behavior. That is for Jesus to do when the time comes. Yes, even gays will be saved if they believe in Jesus as their savior and are baptized. That is what is required of us. God in His infinite mercy will see the sincerity in our hearts and we will be judged on that basis, not what deeds we have done, good or bad.

We all sin and God does not look at sin as greater or less sin. He looks at sin as sin, all equal. A murder is the same as a liar is the same as an adulterer, etc. and since we all sin, (who hasn't told a lie?), none of us should be saved. Jesus came for sinners, and since we all sin, he came for all of us. According to the so-called Westboro Baptist Church, a liar will be saved but a gay person will go to hell. I don't know what bible they read but I read the King James version and I would be more than happy to send them a copy so they can have a clear understanding of the Gospels and the reason Jesus even came to earth in the first place.

It wouldn't be so bad that this so-called church even exists because with only approximately 80 members, mostly family, they can't cause much damage if they can't recruit and hopefully will soon die out. The problem is they are picketing funerals of our soldiers and travel the US to spread their hate messages. They must be stopped. Why doesn't the real Baptist church step in and revoke this so-called pastor Fred Phelps's pulpit? I would be ashamed to be associated with a Baptist church after hearing the message this so-called pastor is preaching and hopefully this is not the message all Baptist churches are spreading.

It seems to me that we detest the thing most in others that we see in ourselves. Adulterers will cry out loudly about other adulterers, thieves against other thieves, and homophobic's against homos. I believe this so-called church is screaming loudest against gays because there is a gay somewhere in the family and they don't want anyone to know it. There are 13 children in this family and why else would a man subject his wife to 13 pregnancies if not to prove his own virility? Maybe it's the Pastor or one of his children or grand-children, but there seems to be something rotten in Denmark here. It won't surprise me if there is a cover-up here too and this is nothing more than a loud outcry to get this sinner to repent. Family problems should be kept at home I was taught.

I urge all to stay clear of this so-called church. We have enough hate in the world and what is needed now is prayer. Please include this so-called church in your prayers so they will repent and learn the true meaning of love and mercy. Ask for God's mercy in his treatment of them. Show them how a true Christian operates, not with hate, but with love and understanding.

You can visit their hateful, hurtful website at:

and don't miss the page:

http://www.godhatesfags.com/main/faq.html#Who

where all they talk about is mercy and yet they continue to spread their hateful messages and make life miserable for the families of our dying boys in the military. We need to pray for and then ignore these and other cults like them that only spread hate in a world that is overflowing with it already. Kansas, wake up and stop allowing this type of behavior to go on. They are terrorists and should be dealt with. It sheds a bad light on what is otherwise a beautiful state in which to live and they travel the country spreading their smut and stepping on other's civil rights. Stay out of Pennsylvania, we don't want you here.

The westboro babtist is not a "church", it is a hate group. They are in it for the money and the press. Most of the members of this "church" are attorneys, so they get away with this. Any one can say they are a "church", that is not going to make you a Church! We in this country let a lot pass for "church". This is not about freedom, it is about being human. The hate is a way to make money, by bringing a Lawsuit against people THEY have provoked. They are running a “church” scam. But, add a bit of crazy on the side just for show.

I recently came across a rather interesting segment of video in which Shirley Phelps-Roper (daughter of Fred Phelps) gets wonderfully in a blatant act of hypocrisy; check it out here: http://tomwebster25.wordpress.com/2010/04/02/shirley-phelps-roper-gets-taken-down-a-peg-or-two/
