He's failing at his goal and this is evidenced by Obama polling better than Kerry in virtually every category except Democrats. Obama is only behind by 5 in Oklahoma and 9 in Kentucky, states Kerry lost by 20% or more. This is not to say he will win those states, but that if Mccain can't even win the racist white male vote, then how is going to win the election.
Whereas Obama is winning the black vote, the hispanic vote, the youth vote, women, and the unaffiliated religious or non religious people, Mccain is succeeding in
winning the veteran vote, the religious right, and the racist vote. He can't win with one or the other, but he can win if he manages to get all 3. As it is right now, our military war-hero president is less than 20% ahead in the veteran vote, and Obama has launched an outreach campaign to gain some of the Evangelical votes, so it's up to the racists to help him out.
Mccain has the four obvious choices for Vice President with a few dark horse candidates as well. The four obvious choices are 3 incredibly risky (read that as "Mccain loses by huge margin if he picks these people")
First,
Mike Huckabee: The incredibly charismatic ex Governor of Arkansas appealed to liberals, conservatives and moderates alike when they watched the debates. He is a religious fundamentalist, but he isn't the "FEAR EVERYTHING" kind of fundy we're used to. He wants to help the poor, but unfortunately he hates the gays and any kind of change. He's a great guy with an 18th century mindset.
If John Mccain chooses this man, he is going to lose the election. The Independents won't vote for him in the states that he needs them. This will cost him the Swing vote in Florida, Pennsylvania, and Ohio which only needs to split 50-50 in all 3 states for him to win. He will lose states like Missouri, the Dakotas, the Carolina's, New Hampshire, Indiana and probably Texas if he makes this choice.
Other crazy fundies on the longlist: Sam Brownback, Roy Blunt, Matt Blunt, Sonny Purdue, John Thune, Bobby Jindal, James Jones
Mitt Romney: Once again, this is a fatal choice. Sure, Romney looks like a president and acts like a douchebag to fit the part. Sure, he has a quarter million dollars, got elected in the most liberal state in the country, and fixed the olympics which nobody watches anyways.
Really though, what does he bring to the ticket that Mccain doesn't already have? The lauded Mormon vote? The anti-Global warming vote? I'd venture to guess that evangelical turnout would lower by 4-10%. This means that while he might help Mccain win Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Michigan, and New Hampshire, he will have the adverse affect on the South.
Other people on Wikipedia longlist that would have this affect (Anti-Mormon, Anti-Douchebag): John Huntsman Jr, Fred Thompson, Phil Gramm, Jeb Bush, any Bush administration members (Rob Portman, Tom Ridge, Condi, Colin Powell)
Bobby Jindal This is the best way to fail. When relying on the racist vote in the south, nominate an Indian to be your Vice President. At least the racists have lived with the AA community for 200+ years now. All they know of the Indian community is that Ghandi fasted, and whenever they call customer service for companies they can't understand the people on the other end.
Does he really think that if he nominated Jindal, the only people who would turnout in the South are the Youth, the Black Vote, and the non racist evangelicals? This is also a terrible idea for him.
Other people on Wikipedia longlist that would have this affect: JC Watts, Alan Keyes, Condi, Michael Steele
Tim Pawlenty: He is one of Mccain's few safe picks. He isn't really offensive, could deliver a state that usually goes blue, is religious but not overally religious and is a relative unknown. He can help Mccain win the Racist Evanglical War Veteran vote.
Other people who could be helpful to Mccain
Guliani: Like him or not for his 9/11 campaign, he is socially liberal (moreso than Obama) and this will cause the Independents to vote for him
Mike Bloomberg: Moderate, would bring in a lot of Independents.
Tom Coburn: Very conservative, but he's like Ronald Reagan. He exudes coolness sticks by his guns.
On the other hand, it would be pure suicide if Mccain picks Romney, Jindal, Huckabee, Jeb Bush, anyone from Alaska, a former lobbyist, anyone with oil company ties, or rumored gay republicans.
Go ahead Mccain, make the right choice. I dare you.

Post a CommentPillowpants, just who is the racist here? Obama is a great speaker, but has a hard time articulating just what "change" he represents. The Republicans made a big mistake in basically backing McCain for the nomination, and can only imagine that due to the faux pas of Bush and how much he has cost and destroyed the Republican Party, felt this election was a giveaway.
Go Constitution Party, the third largest party now in the nation - and can't wait until the next election, with the number of Independents and dissatisfied Republicans and Democrats that are looking for true "change" - perhaps back to our original and intended form of government once again?
Yo Puffy Pants - I'm gonna keep an eye on this article. I want to see if you receive the derision your racist rant deserves? So, OK. & KY are the seats of the "racist white vote?" You have the subtlety of a hurricane and the logic of a sphincter, thus that would make you what? A loud, smelly asshole? If I penned such a hateful and devoid of logic rant i would be crucified on AC, but then I am a Conservative, so no news there. However you can author such vitriol and I'll bet the usual suspects on AC will say "Great Job Pillow!" BTW, I know my comment is not very nice, but your article was a vile and completely useless endeavor in character assassination of all things Conservative, ie "racist white vote," which you referred to numerous times. Shame too, because your overall point about Huckabee & Romney hurting McCain is dead on. Did you have to be so hateful? BTW, as I won't vote for the Messiah come Hell or high water, am I too a racist?
