Who Will Be Notre Dame's New Football Coach?

Or Will Charlie Weis Get One Last Shot?

William Bass
Charlie Weis, Notre Dame head football coach will learn his fate if he'll be canned for underperforming over the last 5 seasons. Weis, has a record of 35-27 during this time span. His winning percentage is lower than Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie, who got the boot for failing to revive Notre Dame football.

The bad thing for Notre Dame is that Charlie Weis has six years left on his contract that Notre Dame would have to buyout. According to ESPN, Notre Dame football players will be voting on accepting a bowl bid with their 6-6 record this year.

Charlie Weis may decide to go to the NFL if he gets the axe in South Bend. I don't think he'll be a head coach, but could possibly become an offensive coordinator for some team.

Who will replace Charlie Weis if Notre Dame fires him? Some names that have been floating around on the Internet is North Carolina's Butch Davis and Cincinnati's Brian Kelly. Personally, I feel that Brian Kelly would be the best fit for Notre Dame. He took a bottom dweller in the Big East and turned it into a National Title Contender. Currently, Cincinnati is 11-0 and looking to win the Big East title this coming weekend when they play Pittsburgh the last game of the season. If Pittsburgh wins then they win the Big East title. However, Pittsburgh is coming off a crushing defeat by the West Virginia Mountaineers.

Butch Davis, North Carolina Tarheel's football coach has improved the program since taking the reigns over. However, I suspect North Carolina would do everything they can do to keep Butch Davis. Coach Davis doesn't seem like a good fit in South Bend. Brian Kelly seems like the best fit because Cincinnati will not be able to pay him what Notre Dame will offer him. Also, Kelly is intense and an offensive genius and he could revive the once storied Notre Dame football program.

Charlie Weis may be a good football coach but failed to deliver to one of the largest fan supported teams in the United States. Maybe expectations were too high for Weis since taking over the program. Then again Notre Dame has had the talent year after year, but failed to deliver a successful season in the eyes of supporters and faculty.

If Charlie Weis is allowed to return as coach of Notre Dame he better produce next year because he'll get no more chances. Notre Dame's best bet would be to go ahead and fire him so the team can move forward in a new direction.

From Nina's comment, I take it he was fired? I think they should have given him another chance.

I'm not happy about Charlie's firing. I think it was a bad decision. Butch Davis, I don't see him being picked. Brian Kelly I do see as the right choice for ND. I hope they pick him.
