Who Will Win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series?

Dana Barnett
There is a lot of talent out there in the entertainment industry this year, especially when it comes to the women in television comedies. At the 2007 Emmy awards, the competition in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series is extremely fierce.

The enormously talented female contenders are as follows:

Tina Fey as Liz Lemon in "30 Rock"

Felicity Huffman as Lynette Scavo in "Desperate Housewives"

Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Christine Campbell in "The New Adventures of Old Christine"

America Ferrera as Betty Suarez in "Ugly Betty"

Mary-Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin in "Weeds"

Of the nominees, all except America Ferrera have won an Emmy before.

Tina Fey has been nominated three times for an Emmy in the past. In 2001, 2002, 2003, Fey was nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Program for her work on "Saturday Night Live." In 2002, Fey and the other writers of "Saturday Night Live won the Emmy.

Felicity Huffman has been nominated for an Emmy once before. In 2005, she was nominated for her work on "Desperate Housewives" in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, the same category she is nominated in this year. Huffman won the Emmy in 2005.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been nominated eight times in the past 15 years. She was nominated in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 for her role as Elaine Benes on "Seinfeld" in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Louis-Dreyfus won the Emmy in 1996. She was also nominated and won in 2006 for her work on "The New Adventures of Old Christine," in the same category and for the same show she is nominated for this year.

America Ferrera has never been nominated for an Emmy. This year will be her first opportunity to vie for the coveted award.

Mary-Louise Parker has been nominated for an Emmy twice in the past. In 2004, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her role in "The West Wing." In 2004, she was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Movie or Miniseries and won for her role in the movie "Angels in America." This year, she is not only nominated for "Weeds," but also in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Movie or Miniseries for "The Robber Bride."

Of all of the contenders, it seems that 23 year old America Ferrera has the best chance to win the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. For one thing, all of the other women already have an Emmy or two on their shelves. Plus, Ferrara won the Golden Globe in 2007 for her work on "Ugly Betty" and the show is enormously popular and critically acclaimed.
