Breaking news is just not worth the hype especially when it comes to accurate reporting of who won the Heisman in 2008. Ballhype.com reported at around 1:30 pm Eastern time on who won the Heisman in 2008 "Breaking News: Sources Confirm Tim Tebow Has Won The Heisman Trophy" by mikeychx from spartyandfriends.com initially reporting "Two in a row for Tebow! A Panelist has confirmed that Tebow indeed has won this year's Heisman Trophy".
Bradford Not Tebow Is Who Won the Heisman in 2008
What's dangerous about citizen journalism especially when it pertains to reporting on who won the Heisman in 2008 extends to sports journalism especially when immediacy and excitement trump getting the facts right. Worse if there's one bit of false reporting such as who won the Heisman in 2008 it then spirals off the hook virally on the web especially when there are little checks and balances. One link leads to another and before you know it Tebow is a two time winner of the Heisman in 2008.

Post a CommentThis is the definition of "Headline Journalism". Someone reads a headline, forms an opinion one way or the other, and moves on to more pressing issues. If the author of this AC piece had even bothered TO READ THE FIRST SENTENCE they would have understood that the piece was satire. Instead, they read a headline and immediately determined that the S&F author incorrectly published something as fact.
Adrienne, if you want to be considered a legitimate journalist, try actually doing journalism work. Maybe read more than the first 10 words of a post. If you want to just be a headline grabber, go work for the National Inquirer.
Ha! I don't suppose you actually read the story? Check back in December when the headline will read, Tebow wins 4th consectutive Heisman.
the post was satire and not meant as serious...go read the post

Good reporting.
Thanks for the detailed response. If you click on the blogger's link, you'll see that they claimed to have inside sources but it is good to know the background of what goes into the ballot process.
opened until the reading. The auditor remains in attendance to ensure the accurate reading. Anyone posting anything sooner than the actual reading is either guessing or trying to be funny. An informed fan would realize that immediately, not think "oh my gosh how did they find out?"
Is this a serious article. I notice that you wrote it 12/13, and I'm assuming (very safely) that it was somewhere around 9:00 pm or later. People posting stories at 1:30 could not have POSSIBLY known who won. Not "there's very little chance" or "very unlikely" or "probably not". THEY COULD NOT HAVE POSSIBLY KNOWN. I'm going to assume also that you know very little about college football, maybe started following it last year because your team did well or something. The Heisman is the MOST SECRETIVE award there is. NO ONE except a single auditor knows the winner. The Heisman trust doesn't know, the DAC doesn't know, the winner doesn't know. Deliotte (the Heisman auditing firm) handles all of the balloting and tallying. Somewhere around 80% they give the trust a list of the top recipients and their current tallies, at which point the trust decides how many and who to invite. A single auditor tallies the totals, places them into an envelope, delivers it to the Heisman trust, and it is not
Great write up. Thanks
