My first memorable Batman experience was Batman Returns. Maybe it was the first Batman movie I saw that I was old enough to remember. I don't know. I had never seen Michael Keaton's first Batman movie. Even to this day, I haven't seen it all the way through. Batman Returns and Batman and Robin, I've seen both of those. Neither were well liked. I couldn't sit through the old Adam West and Burt Ward Batman. It was Batman: The Animated series that sold me. I still enjoy the occasional episode to this day. I own every season on DVD, and nearly every animated movie. Since then, I've brushed up extensively on the graphic novels.
So I might not be as big of a die-hard Batman fan as some, but my opinion still matters, right? So, who would I like to see as the Batman villain for the next movie?
Well, obviously The Dark Knight ended with the expectation that Joker would be back. I imagine it wouldn't have been difficult to write in his death, or at the very least, disappearance in the end. Nobody wants to see Heath Ledger replaced. At this point to replace him as Joker would be a disservice to his memory.
But if we had to find a new Joker? Lee Tergesen. Best known for his role as Tobias Beecher on HBO's Oz. He started off as a lawyer, in prison for killing a little girl while driving drunk. His character went from scared and timid to psychotic in two seasons. He can play crazy, and has the smile to back it up.
Christopher Nolan, the director of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, has done a pretty good job keeping the movies grounded in reality, keeping it more or less realistic. Maybe not necessarily believable, but, well, it wouldn't be impossible for it to really happen.
But let's suspend belief for a moment.
Let's pretend that Christopher Nolan wanted to introduce The Joker's sidekick, Harley Quinn. She was one of two characters that began in the animated series that eventually made their way to the comic. She's bouncy, air-headed, and very eager to please. She's also just as crazy as the Joker. An ultra-athletic version of Brittany Murphy would fit perfectly into the red and black tights.
Another thing that Batman: The Animated Series did for the story was take Mr. Freeze and turn him from a normal mad scientist and make him into a mad scientist with a purpose. He became a character we could feel sorry for; all his evildoings were for his wife, cryogenically frozen until a cure for her disease could be found. Then that character was made a joke of by The Governator. With belief suspended, let's say Nolan wanted to give Mr. Freeze a chance, ice-guns and all? David Duchovny can play smart and stoic. He could be the Mr. Freeze that the audience feels sorry for.
Nolan has done an amazing job of picking actors that nobody would consider for their roles, but has proven his decisions competant. So it almost seems pointless to try and guess who will be Nolan's picks, but it sure is fun speculating.
