She offered me a bite of one and it was a lot better than I imagined so the next time I was at Whole Foods I bought myself one.
One Mac and Cheese Croquette costs 99 cents and it's purchased at one of the deli counters. The croquettes are covered in golden brown breading and are about the size of a small fist. They are sold cold, so you have to warm them up yourself at home.
The Whole Foods croquettes contain macaroni and cheese that's made from pasta containing enriched durum semolina, niacin, folic acid, ferrous sulfate (iron), thiamin mononitrate (vitamin B1), and riboflavin (vitamin B2). The cheese sauce is made from milk, butter, flour, mild cheddar, sharp cheddar, Monterey Jack, mustard ground, paprika, and salt. The other ingredients in the croquette are flour, eggs, bread crumbs, and canola oil.
Whole Foods doesn't list the nutrition facts so I'm not sure how many calories or how much fat one of the croquettes contains.
After heating up the Whole Foods Mac and Cheese Croquette I used a fork to cut into a bite size piece. The croquette isn't very long or wide, but it's quite deep. The crust is very thin so once you cut into it, there's mostly a ton of cheese oozing inside of the filling with a handful of macaroni.
The cheese is more like a sauce it's not like the thick and stiff cheese that's in most homemade macaroni and cheeses. It's flowing and gooey, but it gets stringy once you bite into a piece. It has a mild flavor, it doesn't taste too much like sharp cheddar, the Monterey Jack cheese tones it down and makes it taste more like a swiss cheddar blend.
I like that the cheese in the Whole Foods Mac & Cheese Croquettes tastes nothing like homemade macaroni and cheese, but at the same time it doesn't taste artificial like boxed macaroni and cheese. Overall it has a great flavor and texture, and it gave me a warm comforting feeling.
I wasn't in love with the bread crumb crust though. I liked that the crust is smooth and thin so it's not like you're eating a ton of greasy dough that overwhelms the filling, but it just reminds me of the crust on frozen mozzarella cheese sticks. It unseasoned and it tastes a bit freezer burnt to me, so I'm glad there's not a lot of it on these croquettes.
In the End...
The Whole Foods Mac & Cheese Croquettes makes for a really tasty and convenient comfort food that's great as a snack or as apart of a dinner. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
