Wholesale Merchandise Sellers: Tips to Become a Wholesale Vendor

Melanie L. Marten
People buy wholesale merchandise because of several reasons-one of them is to save money. Buying products in bulk will save you more money than buying retail products individually. Because of the popularity of selling bulk products, more and more wholesale merchandise sellers are sprouting up on the Internet and in neighborhoods across the nation. If you want to get involved in the wholesale to the public trade, there are several things to consider.

Be organized. You should have an inventory sheet of the products that you are going to sell and include all details about the products. Also organize your suppliers in a concise way. Regularly check their stock to make sure you do not run out of a popular item. Using a spreadsheet program that can be easily updated is ideal.

Determine where and how you intend to sell the products in bulk. The Internet provides many opportunities to offer bulk products for sale: online auctions and ecommerce sites as well as straight classified sales. Offline venues are available according to local laws and zoning. Pick a place that is accessible and prominent. Is it along the highway where it can be seen by many people? Or maybe the place is very inconspicuous and cannot be easily seen unless you look really closely. Checking the interior of the place such as lighting, temperature, and overall atmosphere should also be taken into consideration.

You should know where wholesale merchandise sellers buy their products. Since you are also going to sell your products in bulk, you should take advantage of the cheapest deal that you can find. This often means buying directly from manufacturers and suppliers. These people, often overseas, require business licenses and purchases in bulk. Many may require credit checks if you want Net 30 or similar terms at any point.

Be patient. You will encounter many different kinds of people who want to buy wholesale merchandise. Some of them are nice and are very easy to deal with, while others will really put your patience to the test and will haggle until they can get the merchandise for the price that they want. When dealing with hagglers, just agree to lower the price only up to a point when you can still get even a small amount of profit. Online haggling takes the form of Internet auctions and puts the stress of dealing with frugal customers out of your hands.

Be friendly and always smile to your customers. Wholesale merchandise sellers who are very nice and kind will attract more customers than those sellers who are scowling at customers and who look annoyed or irritated for some reasons. All the same customer service rules of retail sales also apply to the wholesale merchandise trade.

Melanie, I love to sell things! I mean I really like it...sort of like playing store when you were kids, but I have to really like the thing I'm selling. My husband keeps saying I should have gone into sales, because I can really sell things I like!
