Whole-Wheat Foods: What Are the Best-Tasting Sources?

Justin
Have you ever looked on the ingredient list of the foods in your house? You will find nearly all of the starch products, such as bread and pasta, contain an ingredient by the name of "enriched wheat flour." The process used to make white flour destroys a large portion of the nutrients. When they enrich the flour, they replenish some of these vitamins and nutrients. Many people may think this is just as good as eating whole-wheat since all these vitamins and nutrients are added, but they would be very incorrect in that assumption.

This processed flour is still missing two very important ingredients even after it is enriched. The bran and the germ, which are the two most nutritious and fiber-rich components of whole-wheat, are destroyed in the refining process. Therefore, you are still missing out on a high amount of fiber and many nutrients. There are many whole grain foods available that taste great as well as being easy to prepare.

One such product that most people aren't aware of is the whole-wheat white bread that is now being produced by Wonder Bread. It doesn't have the strong wheat taste and is a great alternative to regular white bread, especially for children. This new whole-wheat white bread has the fiber, vitamins, and other nutrients that are traditionally associated with whole-wheat bread, so, if you don't want to give up your white bread, you should definitely check into this product.

Another great source, which is one of my personal favorites, is whole wheat spaghetti. You can find this product for very low prices, and it tastes great along with being great for you. It generally needs to be cooked a little longer than its processed counterpart, but it is well worth the extra wait.

Also, a great improvement in your diet can be made by substituting brown rice for white rice. Similarly to whole-wheat spaghetti, it needs to be cooked longer than white rice, but it is much healthier for you. I find the taste to be about the same between the two, so this is an easy one to substitute.

In my opinion, one of the best-tasting sources of whole-wheat you can prepare is pizza. Many people don't want to prepare it themselves and just order out, but it is very easy and not time consuming at all. I make my own whole-wheat crust from whole-wheat flour, and the pizza tastes great afterwards. There is a difference in taste, but it still tastes delicious. This is definitely a great option to try out and incorporate more whole-wheat into your diet.

If the taste of whole-wheat never appealed to you before, maybe you weren't trying the right sources. These options all taste great, and they are also very affordable. Don't let processed white flour contribute to diabetes, obesity, and colon cancer in your life. Try some of these great-tasting whole-wheat alternatives, and you may find them to be better than you presumed.
