Why 24 Hours News Sucks

Mike
My dad and I were watching Headline News today and there were two big news stories. One was about a cruise liner that ran into land and the other was about the 2 cent increase in stamps. Apparently the country is up in arms about a 2 cent stamp increase.

Yup. The news media understands us average Americans. We are super pissed about those 2 cents. So pissed, in fact, that we totally don't want any coverage devoted to gas prices.

Do you see what I am getting at? I have to watch stories about cruise liners hitting land (no injuries by the way) and stamp increases. Then, Nancy Grace has an hour long show about Paris Hilton going to jail like I give a rat's ass.

There are two big problems with 24 hours news. One is that they don't have 24 hours with of news to cover. I can sum up most news stories they show in a few minutes. A cruise ship in Alaska strikes land and their is no injuries? Here is what I would say:

" Earlier today some cruise ship struck land in Alaska. There were no injuries. It is still unknown why people were going on a cruise off the coast of Alaska."

See...perfect.

The other problem is that the news media has no idea what we really care about. How about an hour long discussion on gas prices? Everyone is pissed about gas prices lately. Personally, I want some sort of explanation and an idea about where gas prices are headed. Instead, I have to watch another story about Anna Nicole Smith. Who the hell cares?

Let's not forget about Natalia PrettyWhiteGirl. Remember that girl who got lost in Aruba or something? I had to watch another story about her today. It is sad that she cannot be found. I just want to know if this story would be covered if a poor, ugly black girl got lost. Nope. It wouldn't happen. The news media is also racist. The only time they cover a story about loss of any kind is if there is a pretty, young white girl.

The only time black people are covered is if they commit some sort of hideous crime. It's unbelievable that the news can get away with this. I want CNN to report on the death of James BlackGuy from Detroit, Michigan for an hour. I want to hear about every detail and guess as to why it happened.

So, what do you think about 24 hour news? Does it piss you off like it pisses me off?

Here! Here! :o) I was so thoroughly turned off by the over-coverage of Anna Nicole Smith earlier in the year that I've been staying off the cable news channels ever since. Our economy is sputtering, the war is still raging in Iraq, and our foreign relations going stinky... and all they were trying to get me to watch were AN Smith, Britney Spears, and all the other trivial insignificant characters... Thanks for calling it like it is! :o)
