Why I Am Voting for Duncan Hunter for President

Antoinette McGowan
I have never voted in an election before. I have never before seen a presidential candidate that I found to be someone I wanted in office. This up coming election will see me voting though. I have finally found a man that I would love to see in office. His views and the promises that he is making are just what this country needs. We need a man with a solid back bone and who holds to decent and moral views.

Duncan Hunter has rallied numerous times to keep this country from going to hell in a hand basket. Which is exactly where we are headed. While he is on the conservative side, I find his methods of keeping this country in tact to be right where they need to be.

His views on abortion are pro-life views. I personally am all for abortion being a woman's own private choice. But there are other benefits to the laws that Duncan Hunter has rallied for. He wants to afford the protection of an unborn child being considered a person right from conception. This will even benefit people like me who are pro-choice. How? Well in some states an unborn child is not considered a life, there for if some one attacks you and your unborn child dies from the attack , this attacker is only charged with assaulting you. They are not charged with murdering your unborn child.

Now as a woman who lost an unborn child from an attack, I would love to have seen the person go to prison for murdering the baby that I wanted. But because I was in the first couple of months of pregnancy , the person was only charged with attacking me. He got a fine and that was it. My baby got no justice in this, despite the fact that my baby died.

So you can see how this protection of an unborn child, by considering it a human life right from conception can offer a benefit to even pro-choice people. This protection will not stop abortions but it will offer the unborn child some rights.

Duncan Hunter co-sponsored several legislation that would offer an unborn child rights.

The Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act. This would amend the federal criminal code to prohibit the transporting of a minor across state lines for an abortion if it circumvented the minor's native state's parental involvement law. Duncan Hunter had voted in favor of the bill when it passed the House 270-157 in April of 2005.

I found this to be a good thing. I for one would want to know if my teenager was looking to have an abortion. I would want to be there for my child to help my child make the best possible decision for them. Most teenagers have abortions out of fear and later grow up to regret that decision. I don't ever want my child to do something out of fear ,especially when it involves ending their unborn child's life. I want to know about it and help them to make the right decision no matter what that decision is. So this law is a good thing, in my books.

The Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act of 2006. This act would require all abortion providers to notify women that 20 weeks after fertilization, evidence suggests that their unborn child feels pain and that they may need anesthesia for the unborn child to eliminate the pain.

Another good thing in my books. Because anyone who has been pregnant or is at least educated somewhat in pregnancy, knows that an unborn child is considered viable at 20 weeks. While I am pro-choice I do believe that if you want an abortion then you should do so before the child is considered viable. If the baby can live outside your body then it can feel pain and everything else.

Duncan Hunter's support of the Broadcast Decency Act of 2005, is another area where he has my vote. To much sexual undertones and violence are shown on television nowadays. While I do not believe in censorship, I do believe that some things should not be shown on television while children are watching. Commercials have gone very far with this during daytime hours and I am for one fed up. I love Duncan Hunter's stand on keeping this stuff from our children's eyes.

Tax Penalties for married couples has me in an uproar. Duncan Hunter wants Congress to pass legislation that will make the provision of tax relief to married couples permanent. As it stand the tax relief will expire in 2010. If left the way it is married couples will be hit hard again in 3 years on taxes.

I find Duncan Hunter to be open and honest with his plans for our country. While he stands on some conservative sides, his views and wants for our country are those that will benefit us all in the short-term and long-term. Abortion does seem to be by biggest deal when it comes to looking at the presidential candidates. I find some that want everything to be pro-life to the extreme and others that want it to be pro-choice to the extreme. Duncan Hunter is offering both a middle ground. He is offering to afford an unborn child some protection and rights, while still allowing for abortions to be legal. Duncan Hunter has shown he can compromise and meet in the middle on abortion. I also hate seeing smut on television while my children are watching and I also hate paying such high taxes. Duncan Hunter is offering a way to get relief from both. Duncan Hunter has clearly won my vote.

Political candiates speak of some many laws that can become or not become stepping stones for more laws. All I can do and anyone can do is take a candiate at what they are offering and hope that they don't take it further than they are telling us.

Never heard of him, and so far all I like about him is his name. Granted, you bring up some good points about attacks and clearly you speak from experience. But I fear that a law like this is just a stepping stone into illegalizing abortion all together, since after all, how can one justify killing a "living" person?

You really haven't put much thought into who you are casting your vote for, have you? If a candidates willingness to violate peoples private rights is your only basis for voting then you should abstain. You think a candidate has the authority to tell us what we will and wont do with our own property? How about someone who actually supports the Constitution?

Your experience is without words but you bring to light some important issues that many may have not considered.
