Why is America so Obsessed with Celebrities?

Because the Media Wants It

Dee Dee Smith
They are paid more than teachers, police officers, firefighters, military personnel, doctors and even astronauts. Although some of the aforementioned risk their lives everyday to help and protect us, we per the disparity in salaries, seem to value pop singers, professional athletes and movie stars over any other profession. Why? Simply put many Americans are fascinated obsessed with celebrities.

Recently the media has had a field day sneaking around trying to find out information about the death of and possible burial site of Anna Nicole Smith. Even more of interest has been who is the father of her five month old daughter Danielynn. If you listen to folks talking, they sound as though they know Howard Stern and/or Larry Burkett personally. Everyone seems to have an opinion about who is the "good guy" and who is the "bad guy". How would you know if you've never met these folks, and aren't you simply drawing a conclusion based upon the information that has been dished out by the media? Another hot topic around the office water cooler has been what is up with Britney Spears and the shaving of her head and her multiple attempts to enter rehabilitation. She has been psychoanalyzed over and over again in the media, with news stations consulting experts to try and conclude what might be going on in this young ladies head.

What is this obsession about? Well, here is my theory. The celebrities are making lots of money in their craft, but who is also making the big bucks - and making the big bucks off of the celebrities mind you - that's right, it's the media. The media seems to seek out the potentially talented. Right now they are all over many of the American Idol hopefuls. Early on they introduce the hopeful to us, presenting them as a wholesome and promising individual. Once they reach stardom, the paparazzi (members of the media mind you), are now used to follow the celebrity and/or try to talk with family members, neighbors, old boyfriend or girlfriends, etc., to try and come up with some sensational news story or "dirt" that appeals to the public so that they can sell the story. Hence, the media and those involved in it make even more money.

Because most of the stars/celebrities are actually "used" by the "big guys", they are dispensable, or can be thrown away like dirty rags. Perhaps the "big guys" choose to pay the "big bucks" to ease some of their own guilt and not necessarily to share the wealth.

In conclusion, I believe that a system has been created. A system of setting up or elevating people, and then tearing them down. Lately unfortunately this has been labeled as "news" when to me it is far from it. I think I'll call it what my grandmother used to call it. You remember, you and a friend would be on the phone talking about what someone had told you that someone else said about the new girl in school. That's right? Grandma would say stop gossiping.

I think all this celebrity nonsense comes from girls especially from the UK and Ireland. I have lived in Dublin for a while. Irish girls are extremly conformistic. ALL of them wear the same type of shoes and so on.
How was the star Elvis Presley born? His manager, Colonel Parker, seated a couple of gilrs in the front line telling them to go crazy when Elvis would appear.
Actually in other languages there is no word like CELEBRITY. I mean the concept is crazy. The more the women have to say the more celebrity nonsense is there in a society. The more the Youth has to say the more celebrity nonsense there is.
    Sorry!

The power of makeup? Hello! You might want to add the power of money, lighting, expensive clothes and MAJOR digital retouching.

people need to stop worshiping these hollywood plastics. they are manufactured to sell product, nothing more. ironically, it's mostly women who perpetuate this half-envy, half-worship of hollywood glamor as evidenced by the plethora of magazines they buy at the check out line. just stop, ok? give yourself something to emulate besides these tactless fakes. teach yourself economics, or violin, instead, huh?

and guys, is it just me or do we see women much hotter than these hollywood stars every day in any major city? maybe women need to start having self-respect instead of seeking validation by physical/hollywood standards.

this is not your normal make-up you buy in any drugstore, this is theatrical/stage make-up. They al
