Why Associated Content Should Have a Disability Issues Category

Anita Cameron
As an AC Contributor with disabilities active in the disability rights movement, I am surprised that there is no Disability Issues category. There are hundreds of articles here that deal with every facet of disability, most of them written long before my arrival here.

There is a Diseases and Conditions category, and a Health and Wellness category. Isn't that enough?

No. While both are excellent categories, the Diseases and Conditions category lists articles that describe the medical aspects of certain disabilities. Health and Wellness articles give information on how people with or without certain conditions might live healthier lives. A Disability Issues category would include articles about access to public places, interacting with people with disabilities, agencies and organizations that serve people with disabilities, disability rights activism, and laws that affect people with disabilities.

Why does it matter if there is such a category?

It matters because it will be easier for people to find these articles on Associated Content. As I stated in a previous article, the vast majority of my articles are misfits in other categories because I write almost exclusively about disability rights and social issues affecting people with disabilities. The addition of a Disability Issues category will also increase page views for other Contributors with similar content in that category via the "Related Content" box on the pages of each article.

Are there other ways that the addition of this category will help AC and it's Contributors?

Yes. The addition of new categories means the expansion of the Featured Contributor program. AC Contributors will become Featured Contributors in this category to gain the extra pay and page views, while writing about a subject that they are passionate about. Via the rules of the Program, AC will add to its library of Exclusive content. Further, AC will be able to place targeted ads on the pages of these articles, thus ensuring extra revenue.

Is there another reason to add a Disability Issues category?

Yes. More Contributors with disabilities are joining Associated Content. The addition of this category would send a message to these Contributors that AC welcomes people with disabilities, and cares enough about issues that affect us to add this category so that it will be easier to categorize our articles. No one enjoys the feeling of being left out, or feeling that they don't matter. I hope that AC staff will read this and add this important category!

I totally agree. I was very surprised that there wasn't already such a category.

I just wanted to let you all know that I sent another letter to community@, and received a response from them yesterday. They stated that they loved the idea, and looked forward to adding the category when they had the resources to do so. I hope that I won't have to wait until some point far into the future for this to happen. Anyway, thanks AC!

I agree with you, there should be a category.

I've sent emails to community@, but I imagine that with everything going on, it is of low, or no priority. I know that this idea has been brought to the attention of AC staff, who said that they would consider it. I hope that one day, such a category will exist.

I think this is a great idea. Have you brought it up on one of the community forums?

One of my "Interest" subjects is "Disabilities." More specifically, I used to work with students in special education high school settings and it's important for me to write about special needs. With so many different types of disabilities out there, why not have a Disability contributor category?
