Why Baby Boomers Expect to Age Gracefully

A 1960s Mentality?

Dan Reveal
Could aging gracefully possibly have any connection to the old 1960s diatribe "Never trust anyone over 30?"

You might think so once you begin to see the link between the mentality of the baby boom generation--complete with its history of rebellion and innovation--and why these baby boomers expect to age gracefully.

Graceful Aging Defined

In saying that baby boomers expect to age gracefully, I am not meaning they don't expect to age or eventually die. The idea of graceful aging has more to do with the open mindedness of this unique section of the population that will lead them to quickly pursue the advantages of modern living.

Baby boomers expect to age gracefully because of attitudinal factors directly connected to this particular demographic.

Baby Boom and Advanced Technology

The baby boom generation covers a wide range of people, some of which have been instrumental in developing modern medical advancements.

Can you think of a better reason why baby boomers would expect to age gracefully (pain free in their own homes) than their awareness of these better medical treatments?

Because they've created them, baby boomers expect to be the beneficiaries of better medical treatment ideas.

The Consciousness of Aging

Again, baby boomers are a greatly concentrated group of people. As such, they've become very familiar with the problems of aging and sick parents.

Another reason why baby boomers expect to age gracefully, then, is because they have a greater consciousness of the problems of aging.

This consciousness of aging will lead them to take better care of their own health.

The Focus on Youth

Finally, baby boomers expect to age gracefully because of their focus on youth. This focus on youth has more than one meaning.

To begin, it can refer to the cosmetics companies which aim chiefly at baby boomers in a type of "Stay Young Forever" way of thinking.

Far more compelling, however, is the implication that, because baby boomers come from the 1960s and 1970s, they are focused on youth in the hope of instilling the same idealism associated with these time periods.

Baby boomers expect to age gracefully because the values they possess are seen as timeless and capable of being transmitted to new generations. Baby boomers, with idealism at stake, will want to continue to age gracefully in order to be a good influence.

in sum, baby boomers expect to age gracefully because they know how to take advantage of the most effective medical treatments.

Because baby boomers have witnessed the despair of aging parents and others, they expect to age gracefully as a result of taking good care of their own health.

Lastly, baby boomers expect to age gracefully as a result of the historical idealism which resides in them which is timeless and can be passed along to younger people.

Excellent article and topic, Dan. I agree all of the points you bring up are on my mind as I get older!

I agree with the title to your article. As baby boomers, we really did and still do expect to age gracefully. However, I also think we've been somewhat disappointed, and actually surprised, that we've reached a certain age. In our minds, we still feel like we did at 18. I still love rock music, I watch contemporary TV shows and movies, and I'm up on the latest in technology. I text. There's an example for you! But when the inevitable aches and pains appear, or when we glance in the mirror, we realize our biological age and we're rather shocked. I'm sure your article spurred alot of thinking and dialogue today about this subject.

Ther are better medical treatments available for us than for our parents, but some of them I won't take advantage of . Who needs surgery or more medical bills?

Great article! I think the most important thing for (me) to do as I age is to take everything in good stride, enjoying life at its fullest.

Being a baby boomer myself, there is no such thing as aging gracefully...it is what it is!

What they expect and what they get are two different things. Many face the task of raising grandchildren when their children continue to be selfish and fail to consider that maybe it is time to chip in. I envision dropping dead while trying to earn money to pay bills and having someone yell at me for taking a break. As for the medical care? Who can afford it?
