Why You Need to Back-Up Your Files!

If you value the information stored on your home computer, and the vast majority of us do, then it is absolutely essential that you back-up your personal files on a regular basis. There are programs and software applications available to schedule such back-ups, which automatically copy the files you've specified to a remote location. However, some of these programs can be costly and most are not user-friendly whatsoever - some might even charge a monthly or yearly fee to continue using their service. What most people don't know is that with just a few clicks and a little bit of your own free time, you can back-up your files on your own quite easily.

First you'll want to consider what type of medium you wish to transfer your files to. CDs and DVDs are good options, but their reliability is relatively low and if you have a lot of files to back-up, you may need to use several discs to store the data.

External hard drives are a very popular option for storing back-up files, and they've been used for years. Not only is an external hard drive much more reliable that a CD or DVD, but it can also hold more information and it is faster, as well. USB thumb drives, sometimes known as jump drives are also becoming more and more popular today; but again, their capacity is limited.

Internet solutions are available for backing up your personal files, too, though there is almost always a monthly fee associated with the service. These are quite reliable and secure, however. In the unfortunate event of a fire or natural disaster at your home, all of your important data will still be safe and sound in a remote location. If you have files that you absolutely cannot afford to lose, this is probably the best solution for you.

Once you've decided on the medium to use, you need to figure out what files you should back-up. Some files, like your program applications, can all be reinstalled from the original disc if you still have it - therefore it's probably not necessary to back-up these files. On the other hand, if there are any personal pictures, music files, homework assignments or work projects on your home computer, you should make sure to back up these. Some other types of personal files that are commonly backed-up included your internet favorites, your address book (both online and offline) and more.
