Why and How to Become an Organ Donor

At some point, it's possible you might need an organ donation. There are numerous diseases that destroy organs that are vital to our survival. There is not yet enough technology for us to stabilize these diseases without the help of organ donation.

Organ donation is possible to do while living, and after one has passed. As of July 7, 2010, according to OrganDonor.gov, there are over 100,000 people in need of a transplant. That number is significantly larger than the mere 3400 donors that gave organs between January and March of 2010.

How do you become an organ donor? There are several ways. If you are interested in finding more about live organ donation, visit OrganDonor.gov to see the state registries for live organ donation. You may also choose to select to be an organ donor on your state's driver's license, as well as by filling out a donor card that is kept on your person at all times.

There are many things to consider when selecting to be an organ donor. One of the ones I often think of, are if the organs will be used for medical testing, or to save another life. You may designate how you would wish your organs to be used, but it is important that your family know your desires for the type of organ donation you prefer.

Some hold ethical considerations when deciding to be a donor. Religious beliefs may guide you in making this decision, as well as society ethics. Becoming an organ donor while living, or choosing to give your organs after death, is an important decision. It is also a decision that must be made, as so many people are in need of vital organs for their survival.

Deciding to become an organ donor can be a gratifying experience for an individual. Choosing to be a live organ donor is an even more important decision. OrganDonor.gov lays out great ethical guidelines and standards for one considering live donation. The National Living Donor Assistance Center can also help answer questions regarding the decision making process and cost concerns.

There is a deep need for organ donors, both from those living, and those who have passed. Consider the numbers, and what you would do if a loved one was in need of an organ donation. If there is a way you feel you can help, register today.
