Why Being a Single Mom is Awesome

T. McSpadden
Single parenthood is not a walk in the park, but it is not as horrible as most people believe. Being a single mom has been the most rewarding experience of my life. I have encountered a lot of negativity over the years, but I still think being a single mom is awesome.

Common Misconceptions

There are so many things that people assume when they find out that I am a single mom. Most people assume that I am struggling to make ends-meet, or that I am desperate to establish a new relationship so that I can have help caring for my child. The truth is, being a single mom does not automatically mean I am any worse off than anyone else. Yes, I do not have the stability of some two income families, but in all honesty many two income families are hard pressed to meet their monthly obligations. Even though I am a one woman show, I still manage to give my child all of the emotional and financial support necessary.

Establishing a Closer Relationship

Since my child and I only have each other, we have formed a closer relationship than I even enjoyed with my parents. There are, of course, boundaries so that my child understands who is in charge of our family. Even with me playing the big bad mommy, my child and I have been able to form an extremely close bond.

School Ties

Being a single mom and a work at home mom, I have been able to play an active part in my child's school activities. I am a room parent, and a member of our schools PTO. Through my interaction with the other parents, I have been able to network with other single parents. Having someone to bounce parenting ideas off of is fun, and it also gives the children a chance to meet kids who have grown up with a similar household dynamic.

Family Planning

Perhaps the most convenient part of being a single mom is the ability to easily plan events and watch the budget. When dealing with a large family, it can be hard to find something that everyone wants to do. As a single mom, I am able to decide what we will do as a family (with some input from the little bit) and make things happen. I am also better able to budget because I do not have to worry about unexpected expenses incurred by my better half.
