Why I Believe You Should Skip Prom

Christine Hodgson
It's the end of your senior year of high school. Four years of hard work has finally paid off. You have more knowledge than you will probably ever use in the back of your head. But all you can think about is that end of year adolescent adrenaline rush known as prom. Nearly every high school student wants to attend prom. You believe it will be that once-in-a-lifetime event that will be one of the greatest memories of your life. Here are a few reasons why I believe otherwise.

Money

Prom costs money, and lots of it. If you can go on a budget, that's great but the cost of renting a tuxedo or more importantly, buying a dress, can be outrageous for a one night event. And let's not forget about the actual cost of prom, plus the limo, and "after prom".

Generic

Don't get me wrong, just because something is generic doesn't automatically mean it's not worth trying. However, prom has become emphasized to such an extreme for high school students and depicted in movies as something so important to attend, when really, it's just a dance.

Fakeness

If you haven't noticed, many girls get fake tans for prom night, and get their hair and makeup done professionally. Fake tans are not only bad for your skin, but you will also look fake. Also, applying so much makeup that you look unrecognizably different is hardly flattering.

After Prom

Some may go to a comedy club at 1 am, others to a nightclub, and still others to some house where there is no adult supervision and tons of alcohol. The potential for making irresponsible decisions is pretty high.

If you do decide that prom isn't for you, do something fun on your night off knowing that you aren't following the crowd and have probably saved a ton of money.
