Why Blogs Are Important to Small Businesses

Candice Cain
If you own your own business, you should write a blog. If you work for someone else and want to expand your personal business, you should write a blog. Even if you don't think that you write very well, you should write a blog. You have something to say about your business, and there are people that want to read it. When you write, write as though you are addressing those that are interested in what you have to say about your business. Address them as though they are right on the brink of becoming your clients.

Creating your own blog is easy. Anyone can do it. Go to a website such as Word Press, Blog Spot or Blogger and create a free account. Name your blog. Choose the theme that you are going to follow, such as destination weddings. Start writing. Don't forget to post photos. Make sure you use spell check. Post often, but don't be redundant.

Yes, creating your own blog is easy. Generating a readership, however, proves to be a bit trickier. The think you must keep in mind is that there are hundreds of thousands of blogs out there. Do not get discouraged. Keep writing, and people will find your blog, as long as you use key phrases that they will search for. Also, make sure to tag every blog post using keywords. Read the tips and tricks offered on the blog hosting site.

The worst possible thing you can do with your blog is write and not tell anyone about it. Give out your blog address! Put it on your Facebook page, mention it in your "tweets", even include it in your email signature. The more people that see it, the better chance you have of people clicking on the link and reading your blog.

Another way that you can draw attention to your business is through writing for another company's blog, such as an online magazine or community. For example, a wedding professional may look to write for The Knot or WedAlert.com. In exchange for writing a blog entry for one of these websites, they may give you a reciprocal link or other type of free advertising. Plus, you can usually plug your own business within your blog entry, as long as it written tastefully.

Having your voice heard (so to speak) is the most important aspect of growing your business. What you say, of course, is equally as important. Potential clients not only want to know what you can offer them, they also want to know that you know what you are doing. Your blog can establish your reputation, especially if you are (or appear as though you are) an expert in your field.

You can use your blog as a referral tool as well. Even if you do nothing to get readers, you can always refer a potential client to your blog so that they can read entries that you have written about your business category. That alone can put you ahead of your competitors. In this day and age of the Internet, it is important for your business to take advantage of anything that may give you an edge.
