Probably the only downside to BD discs is that they can only be played with BD disc players. This includes Playstation 3. But then again, DVD movies can only be played with a DVD player, so it really isn't a downside.
Why You Should Have BD Technology
BD discs have the same size as DVDs, they are made using a blue laser, which makes data encryption very precise and very compact. It also has a slightly different disc structure than the DVD. Both the blue ray and the disc structure allow BD discs to have a far higher storage capacity than the DVD. A single layer BD can store up to 25GB of data while a double disc can store up to 50GB of data.
Apart from the high storage capacity, BD technology writes information on multiple layers and makes good use of Java technology, thus making BD movie titles more interactive. If you don't have a BD player yet, don't fret. You can expect the BD to be as common as DVD players within the next few years. After all, the BD disc was developed by Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), a group composed of 170 consumer electronics manufacturers like Samsung and PC and media manufacturers. The technology is supported by film companies as well as gaming companies.
Just how "high definition" is the BD? The video quality of a BD disc is roughly double that of High Definition TV broadcast, up to 54Mbit/sec. A BD video can have a resolution of up to 1920 x 1080.
BD Disc Players: The Round Up
Software giant Microsoft might just develop a BD disc drive for its Xbox 360 gaming console. Of course, if you are not a gaming fanatic, this really isn't good news.
The good news really is that Sony is already offering Sony BD players, which allow you to also play DVD movies, audio CDs, AVC-HD apart from BD movies. The Sony BDP-S300 is especially a good find for playing Hollywood movies. In Hollywood, a film is typically shot at 24 frames per sec. The Sony BDP-S300 is mastered at 24 frames/second. So what you can expect is a true-to-form Hollywood experience.
Panasonic, another consumer electronics giant, also has a BD player in its line-up, the P4HD. This BD player can process video data at an outstanding rate of 15 billion pixels per second. What you get is video in rich and vibrant colors with astounding depth and clarity.
