The college dorm was quiet tonight. Everyone was still out partying or passed out in their rooms. Her door was shut, but she left no sign for her roommate, if she were to return. She sat on her bed with her back to him, and he stretched out behind her, waiting in silence. Her eyes returned to the gift that he had brought, but could she accept it? "This is wrong," she thought. "What if I can't give him what he wants?"
His heart had been broken before. His ex-girlfriend fell for another man, but instead of telling him the truth, she led him on, playing mind games. The truth still came out, and he was sliced in half, left alone in misery. But he found comfort with the one now beside him, leading them to here.
"Well," he said. "Do you want to give us a chance?"
"This is wrong." She closed her hands over his heart. "I know I will hurt him." Tears touched her eyes. "I don't want to be alone. I want someone to love me." A knot tightened in her stomach. "But can I love him?"
"If you need time, I can go."
"No." She touched his hand. "No, I want you to stay." Her fingers tightened around his heart. "I want to give us a chance." She leaned closer to him. "Maybe this time will be different," she thought.
"I love you." He kissed her face. "No regrets?"
She was notorious for breaking hearts. All those white knights that came to her door could have saved her, but she cut them in half. Her door was left open instead to the hands of cruelty, men that would tear her down, but she was caught in a vicious cycle, a cycle that she needed to break. And maybe he would save her, but the knot tightened again in her stomach. Was her fear of being left alone greater than breaking his heart? "No," she said. "No regrets."
