Why Breeding Cats is a Bad Idea

And Which Ones You Should Choose If You Do it Anyway

Miss Marie
Before you decide for sure whether or not you're going to breed purebred cats you need to take a look at breeds' individual qualities and then decide if that breed is right for you.

Siamese:

There are two basic types of Siamese cats. The first has a larger, more broadly structured body than the second. It is known as the Apple head Siamese or the Classic Siamese. These cats have an appropriately apple-shaped or wide and rounded head. The Wedge head Siamese has a slender body, a very narrow face, and its eyes are shaped like almonds. All Siamese have blue eyes, a short cream and brown coat, and a low pitched meow. These cats are extraordinarily personable and would not be happy without human association.

Burmese:

These cats resemble the Siamese cats in their body's structure and temperament. They're exceptionally soft animals with a short, glossy, velvety coat that can range in color from a light cream to almost black. Their eyes range in color from an incredibly light yellow to deep blue. They are extremely attention seeking, playful animals and will get angry when they are not loved on and played with. There is a recognized difference between the female and the male traits of this breed- this difference being a male is more relaxed and cuddly and a female is more active and playful.

Russian Blue:

These cats are, as their name implies, bluish gray in color. Their coat is short and very dense and their body structure is long and muscular. They have a slender tail and a wedge shaped head with ears that sit at an angle. These animals are famous for their emerald green, wide eyes and their smile that sits slightly upturned. This breed has a sweet and gentle temperament with a playful personality and a clever mind. They often hide from strangers and don't accept new people easily.

Siberian:

The Siberian is a large, broad boned cat with long fur that is hypo-allergenic. This cat can be any color. They are loyal, affectionate, playful; good with children and other animals, and are generally healthy, hardy cats.

Savannah:

The Savannah is a hybrid created by breeding the Serval and a domestic feline. These are the largest cat available weighing anywhere from 10 to 30 pounds depending on generation. These cats are very dog-like in their intense amounts of energy, intelligence, and fun-loving nature and would get along well with dogs. They resemble a wild cat in both their spotted coloring and their long, muscular, athletic build.

Sphynx:

These cats are extremely well known for their exceptionally short fur coat that feels like soft suede. Most refer to these animals as "hairless cats" even though it's not actually true. These animals are skinny and have short legs with a triangular face and large ears. They're very friendly animals that adapt well to their surroundings and are show-offs by nature that make wonderful companions.

On a further note you must truly consider and weigh the consequences versus the rewards of breeding. In most cases this hobby will not earn you any money, in fact you'd be lucky if you broke even. If money is then the only reason you want to breed; back down now, because you will earn nothing.

If you love the cats and want to have hundreds of them for the sake of owning them, you should not breed animals. There are hundreds of animals in desperate need of adoption and breeding them for the sake of owning them is an irresponsible practice.

If you are the emotional type who would be devastated after an animal died you should not become a breeder. You must, as a breeder, understand how many of the animals you will lose. It's not uncommon for kittens to be stillborn or a mother cat, especially when she's never been a mother, to eat her young after they're born. It's also not uncommon to have a mother cat need a C-section due to birthing issues and lose some of the kittens or even die herself in the process.

Furthermore, after the kittens grow there's a time period where it's extremely dangerous for them to run loose and play in the house. Kittens die every day due to fatal injuries caused by careless human events. These events include crushing them in the fridge or underneath a recliner, drying them in the dryer and locking them in an area where they get stuck and can't breathe. These events will break your heart and without the understanding that these things can and do happen, you should not become a breeder.

Even still this can be an incredibly rewarding hobby filled with the joys of watching young animals grow, play, love and enjoy their lives to the absolute most. Through this hobby you can meet hundreds of people who have many traits in common with yourself. However, this is the kind of time consuming career that is better left alone. The immense responsibility, unavoidable letdown, and incredible expense one would have to go through to take care of and breed these animals is so dramatic most would deem it contemptible and ridiculous.

Did you know that, if you're allergic to cats, you would likely have a worse reaction to a hairless cat than one covered with fur? This is because the chemical most people have a reaction to is in the cat's saliva, not the dandruff itself.
