Why Brunswick County, North Carolina is the Place to Be

EBurgin
The county I live in, Brunswick County, North Carolina, is one of the fastest growing counties in the USA. Three years ago, my husband and I decided we had had enough of the cold and snow of New Jersey winters and put our house up for sale. We sold it to the first people who looked at it, and we were on our way south. We settled in St. James Plantation, a community in Brunswick County, NC. Brunswick county is the southernmost county in NC, and borders Horry County, SC, the county which encompasses Myrtle Beach.

Most of the people in our community are young, active retirees. Golf is a big attraction here at St. James. There are 81 holes within our community and several other courses within easy driving distance. Tennis is big here also, with 10 "Har Tru" surface courts. There are many levels of skill, from "friendly" to highly competitive teams who travel to other towns and even to other states to participate in tournaments. Our family members love it that we are only about 10 to 15 minutes from the beautiful, uncrowded white sand beaches of Oak Island, NC. It's great to take visiting family members and grand kids and spend the day riding the waves or hunting for shells. For the boating enthusiasts, our community has a marina with both "wet slips" and dry storage. The marina is located on the inter-coastal waterway with easy access to the ocean.

The nearest town, Southport, dates back to 1792. Fort Johnson, on the Cape Fear waterfront in Southport, played a role in both the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. Aside from the historic sites, Southport is an active artist colony, with many galleries and studios.

One of the features we liked about our new home is that we are still only a days drive from New Jersey, where many family members still live. We have heard that people who live here are sometimes called "halfbacks" , or halfway back home to the Northeast from Florida, where many boomers originally retired. It is only a days drive to NJ, where we have a family members, when we go home for the holidays or for special occasions.

We are in the vanguard of the baby boom generation, and expect many more people in our age group will be making a move south to escape the high taxes and cold winters of the northeast just as we did. Next year at this time we fully expect that many more "boomers" from the Northeast will be looking at Brunswick County, NC, as a retirement mecca. We invite them all to "come on down!" It will be interesting to see what the future hold in store for Brunswick County, NC, one year from now!
