Why You Need to Buy Batman Arkham Asylum - Video Game Review for XBox 360

The New Arkham Asylum Batman Knows How to Have Fun!

John Chambers
If you have followed the Batman video game series since its inception, you probably weren't too excited when you heard of a new game called Batman Arkham Asylum - I sure wasn't. It seems that for some reason it has been difficult for videogame developers to capture that thing that makes Batman so freakin' cool. We love the way that Batman brings justice to the guilty ones, and the fact that he is really just human underneath his suit. It's easy for everybody to relate to Batman and what he stands for because he's like us. In the past, there was a disconnect, but this time the developers got it right. You can lurk in the shadows, hang upside down waiting for the right moment to strike, and as the criminals you're hunting realize that they're being hunted, you can sense their fear. This Batman Arkham Asylum review was done with the XBox 360 version, however most of the information in this Batman video game review is applicable to other console versions. Here's the lowdown on the new Batman Arkham Asylum videogame:

Features

A variety of gameplay styles, including a sandbox approach to accomplishments, Metroid style "I'll come back to that thing I can't get to when I find the right equipment," Resident Evil 4 style third person combat, and oldschool platform gaming. With "detective mode," Batman can solve crimes and complete the Riddler quests for even more game play variety. The combat system is based on combos and is fluid and intuitive. Initial gadgets include batarangs and a grappling hook, and Batman finds many more wonderful toys along the way. The voice acting is expertly laid down by Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin from "Batman: The Animated Series." The story was written by Paul Dini, long-time Batman mastermind, and adheres closely to DC Comics version of Batman.

Limitations

Batman Arkham Asylum can become repetitive if you let it. In many situations there is one best move, which is usually inverted takedown, rinse, and repeat. The boss fights are generally predictable. The Arkham Asylum Batman can do things in a variety of ways, and if you mix it up a little along the way, you will get many hours of varied, interesting gameplay.

If you are a Batman fan, and especially a "Batman: The Animated Series" fan, you will not be disappointed by this game. Pick it up from most retailers now for $50 and up.
