Why Buy a Pocket Sprung Mattress?

What Makes Pocket Springs Worth It?

Arron Cook
You've probably come across the term "Pocket Sprung" before when considering a mattress, but might've wondered what makes it any different to regular spring - or a regular pocket! People can hear these bed industry jargon words and be none the wiser about what's actually being said. Let me attempt to clear away the fog and make a few things clearer.

Just to make it plain, a pocket sprung mattress is a normal coil sprung frame, but with each spring inside it's own individual fabric pocket. What this does is create an effect something like a shock absorber. Where as traditional mattresses bounce and return to their normal shape quickly, pocket springs reduce bounce, and create a firmer feel to the mattress.

But don't let that make you think that pocket springs are therefore always better. Being Pocket Sprung does not necessarily mean that a bed is of better quality. Some pocket sprung beds are awful. Often, the thing that determines whether a pocket sprung bed is good or bad is the number of springs. Any less than 1000 Count Sprung isn't really worth having, as any mattress variety is too soft in that number. Any more than 1500 tends to become a little like sleeping on bricks. Around 1000-1200 is usually just right.

Pocket Sprung mattresses are a matter of preference. Some people find them too hard, and don't like them - some people really enjoy and benefit from the firmer foundation beneath them. Make your own choice, and go with what suits you and your body.
