Whether you are looking to buy a used car or purchase a new car, shopping online allows car buyers to compare various makes and models while ensuring they are able to secure the best deal. Find out what is involved with buying a car online and see if this option is right for you.

Determine how you wish to purchase your new or used car. If just looking to buy a car online buy doing price comparisons, dealer listings on websites, auto-themed sale sites and city-specific classified sties allow for vehicle comparison. One caveat though is that not all listings include relevant information. While some include pictures, correct mileage information, VIN numbers and other important deciding factors, some simply choose to create a basic or incomplete listing which requires the car buyer to either call for more detailed information or skip over the listing entirely.

Be sure to seek-out all sources. In addition to price comparison, classified and dealer listings, auction-style listings may be a viable choice. Most require an earnest or good faith deposit when buying a used or new car online; so be prepared to have at least $500-$2000 available on a credit card. Try using a site like PayPal to conduct the transaction, as it has the buyer protection guarantee. Do not bid on a car though if unsure, the price looks to good to be true, or if the seller will not release the VIN number before the sale.

You will need to conduct a Carfax report before bidding, as it is best to be out a little bit of money as opposed to the price of the car. See if the seller has done a recent Carfax report himself/herself and ask that it be presented before bidding, as this will save you the Carfax fee. Remember though, Carfax reports do not list all major repairs so you will still need an independent inspection.

Keep in mind where you are buying the car from and how hard it will be to register it. If looking for a smooth transaction, you don't necessarily have to buy a car in your city, just in your state. It may be harder to purchase a car out of state and register it in your home one. If unsure, purchasing a new or used vehicle from a dealer would probably work best, as they frequently handle titling and registration.

Get the vehicle independently inspected before making a final purchase. No matter how or where the vehicle is being purchased, be sure to get it independently inspected, preferably with the vehicle make's service department. If one is not available, an ASE Certified Mechanic (holding multiple certification areas) is another good choice.

Don't be afraid to back out. If at all feeling uneasy buying a new or used vehicle online, stop and think about it. You don't need to worry and can move on to the next listing.
