Oh man, why can't we just stay focused on something? Why can't we just plain concentrate? It interferes with our families, our lives, our careers...why can't we keep a handle on our concentration? Well, there is actually a viable reason for why we just plain can't stay focused as a human species in general, and most of the things that cause us to lose our concentration can actually be controlled. Learn why you just can't concentrate, before it drives you nuts. Even better, learn what you can do about your lack of focus...
Huh? What was that? Sorry, I was just checking my email, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, etc. Social media and all those lovely outlets distract us to none other. How about this- only focus on your social media accounts when you can actually dedicate the time to them. When you are at work, you focus on work, right? Well then, do this for your other aspects of life, so you don't let your Facebook account interfere with your family or work life. If you can just stay away from the social media stuff throughout the rest of your super busy day, your concentration will increase on the things that immediately matter. If you have to walk away from your computer to stay away from your social internet stuff, then well, do it. You'll be able to concentrate better this way. Better yet, don't log in to begin with until you can stick to it for a while. This will keep you from being distracted in the first place.
Put that cell phone on silent when you don't really have the time to take a call. Texting and talking on your phone all day long distracts you from your tasks at hand, and you can really interfere with your day if you are spending most of it on your phone. There was once a day where we didn't have cell phones to pack around with us, so people would actually have to wait until they got home from their busy day to call people. Hmm. If you can't bear leaving your cell phone at home while you are at work or school, then leave it in the car. Or at the very least, put that damn phone on silent so you can focus already!
Multitasking is more detrimental than it is beneficial. Why? Because everything you are doing is only getting partially done but you're still busy as all get-out. Your better option? Tackle only a thing or 2 at a time- you'll find that you are finishing your tasks more quickly and effectively, and getting more stuff done without getting frazzled. And who couldn't be happy with that? If you can handle a few smaller tasks at once, go for it. Larger tasks should get more of your one-on-one attention, however.
Quit being bored, which is the biggest concentration murderer of them all. When you are bored, your mind wanders, and when your mind wanders, the only thing getting done is your imagination going into overdrive. When you feel boredom kicking in, whether it be at work or otherwise, pull yourself back into focus of your task at hand by writing down what it is that you should be doing. This way, you can jerk yourself back when you need to and not get caught at work with your mind going elsewhere.
Likewise, stress and being nagged over and over by something can just plain freak you out and leave you so unable to focus and concentrate you could go bonkers. Filter out all that negative energy by writing down what is bothering you, imagining it like a balloon being released, and then taking a big breath. If you have to, schedule a time in your head to handle a problem so you can temporarily let it go. Otherwise, this stress and distraction will leave you with the inability to focus on the things that really matter. If you have to, take a break for 15 minutes or so, go to your car, scream it out, and get back to what you should be doing. If you let stress take over, you won't be able to concentrate on a single thing.
