Why are cat's tongues so rough? Mainly to eat, the tongue is like a scraper and gets meat off bones. That is, if your cat hunts. Otherwise, it is for grooming and works like a comb on their fur.
Whiskers, what purpose do they serve? They work like feelers or antennae to help a cat navigate in dim light. Cats use them to find their way around in darkness and to detect objects. There are about 12 on each side of their face. Whiskers can also be used to gauge a cat's mood. Laid back against the face means the cat is afraid or angry. However, if they are fanned out from the side of the face it means the cat is happy and relaxed.
The tail serves several purposes. Mainly it is used for balance but it also is a good indicator of a cat's mood. If a cat carries its tail high, it shows a happy, dignified cat. If lower, it shows they are relaxed. However, when a cat starts twitching it can show two things, either annoyed or excited, like when they play. But if the tail is held down close to the body and twitching back and forth, look out. They are angry and giving out a warning, "do not mess with me, I'm in no mood for it."
Why do cats purr? No one is really sure about that. Possibly for any number of reasons. Happy, content cats purr, but cats in pain often purr as well. Cats purr to get attention from time to time. Therefore, there are plenty of theories out there but it seems to be that each cat has its own reasons to purr. As for making sounds, cats can make up to 16 different sounds. Of course, as any Siamese cat owner can tell you, their cat vocalizes more than others. Cats can meow, purr, chortle, howl, hiss and chirp just to name a few of their sounds.
Does your cat seem to sleep all day and half the night, then play the rest of the night? You are not alone, cats are nocturnal. And they sleep more than any other animal, about 16 or so hours a day. However, most of that sleep is really just a nap. If you watch a sleeping cat, you will see their ears turn towards noises. They are always on the ready to pounce or play. What can a cat's tail tell you about it's mood? How many whiskers does a cat have? Why does a cat purr?Cats have been known to purr not only when they are happy but when they are in pain.
