Why Do Catholics Wear a Crucifix with Christ on the Cross?

Shaila D Touchton
The cross with Christ upon it is a reminder of the love He has for us. The crucifix is also a way to help keep us humble and reminds us not to sin. The crucifix is a reminder for us that it was our sins that nailed Him to the cross.

Scripture says that God will "pour out a spirit of grace and supplication" as people gaze upon Him who died for us. In the Old Testament, there is a prophetic verse in Zechariah which states:

And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit

Romans 6: 1-12 is a wonderful passage to read where we are told we are united with Him in His death and shall be united with Him in His resurrection.

Paul writes through the Spirit in, Galatians 6:14 But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. So, for the children of God, the cross has a spiritual (not physical) context because it represents not only our salvation, but our death through Christ unto the world and its ungodly ways. Another verse on our spiritual cross is Luke 9:23, And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

The Bible is clear about the importance of the cross

1 Corin1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing-but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.-Gala6:14-May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me & I to the world.-1 Corin1:17

For Christ did not send me to baptize-but to preach the gospel not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

In 1 Cor 1:23-24 Peter states: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

John 3:14 Jesus states: And as Moses lifted the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Jesus Himself tells us that He must be lifted up onto the cross, so that in this way people will believe and have eternal life.

Excellent points! Thanks for taking the time to explain this; it's great seeing others taking the time to explain why we Catholics do what we do.
