Some parents feel that if they themselves weren't excellent mathematicians; then their children are bound to have a hard time with the subject. Some parents also feel that most mathematical concepts are not useful in careers other than health, science or engineering. They feel that if their child has no interest in the fields that employ mathematical principles constantly, then what's the point in encouraging their child to have anything other than basic math skills?
Despite these beliefs widely held by many parents and adults, math has many benefits in life. The study of-and respect for-mathematics can build many skills that can encourage the development of strong and effective adults.
The obvious benefit of encouraging a child to be good at math; would of course be that your child will hopefully be good with money and accounting matters. These are very important benefits. But, there are other benefits to studying all forms math as well-not just addition and subtraction; dollars and cents.
Even subjects such as calculus and algebra create qualities in adults that can be useful in life-even if these adults never move into a career that applies the direct use of algebra and calculus per se. A person who hones their skills in mathematics; can be considered a person who thinks mathematically.
A person who thinks mathematically is a person who is a natural problem solver. Mathematical thinkers approach problems instead of running from them. They question problems and look for solutions; and they look for many possible solutions to all problems.
This type of person also displays the ability to stick to a problem for a considerable amount of time without being intimidated by it; or feeling defeated by it. They will try many different methods and weigh the solutions for feasibility and usefulness.
They may find many answers; but, will consider them all as a possible solution. If a mathematical thinker cannot arrive at a complete solution; a mathematical thinker will try to find a workable solution. In this way; the study of basic math and more complex mathematical concepts can be applied to daily adult life. A child that does well in basic and complex math will have the ability to use these skills effectively in all facets of their lives.
The aforementioned skills are excellent skills for anyone to have. Most parents have the desire for their children to posses these qualities. These are qualities that people from all walks of life will need: lawyers, actors, and bricklayers. These are qualities any parent would want their child to have; because qualities such as these insure that their child will have a greater ability than most to attain their life goals.
