Undergraduate Programs. One reason why many students are initially interested in attending NYU is because it has undergraduate programs that have gradually built excellent reputations and are staffed by people with working experience in their area of expertise. The best known of the undergraduate programs is the Tish School of the Arts. This is an undergraduate program which welcomes those interested in pursuing careers in theater, film, dance and of course television.
The Stern School of Business also has well documented success in training its undergraduates to move on in the world of business. Sitting in the midst of the economic flow of the nation in New York City, NYU has the opportunity to assist students in finding intern possibilities with firms in the city.
The prestige that these two undergraduate schools have acquired is considerable and continues to grow as the number of successful alums appear in the arts and business communities.
NYU Campus For many parents one major draw back about NYU is its lack of a traditional campus setting. The University rather than being set apart from the busy city life around it, seems rather to be almost absorbed by it. While this is off putting to some parents, for many students it gives them the feeling of independent living in the middle of New York City.
Instead of regular dormitories, students find themselves living in buildings that are converted hotels or apartment buildings. While there is a very different feeling to this kind of dwelling then what one might find on a suburban or rural campus, NYU officials do make a more than serious effort to attend to the security needs of students.
Nor is there a lot of normal student activities on the "campus of NYU". For example don't look for the football team , there isn't one. Nor is fraternity or sorority life much of draw on campus. It seems that when you are located in the busiest city in the world, the need for college clubs and organizations seems to rather disappear.
What is noticeable at NYU is that the student body is about as diverse as one student body can get. There are large percentages of minority students and no one seems to fit the image of the typical NYU student. This diversity provides an education to those students who are open to it or who seek it out.
City Life. The obvious trade off for the less than dazzling campus life is the fact that NYU is located in New York City, specifically in Greenwich Village. There is so much going on in New York that it is hard to know where to begin. Young people find that their free time has a million possibilities tugging at it. Huge museums, top Broadway shows, harbor cruises, site seeing tours, unbelievable clubs and restaurants are at every turn. It might not take those with good orienteering skills long to find their way around New York City , but it will surely take many students most of their undergraduate spare time trying to see and do all that is offered by the "city that never sleeps".
Choosing New York University Perhaps more so than with many other undergraduate colleges, choosing New York University very definitely means choosing to live a particular lifestyle. NYU students must want to embrace their urban surroundings, their diverse classmates and their demanding studies or they will be in for a very long four years. On the other hand those who can handle the challenges of New York University will find that where they go to college opens all kinds of doors for professional advancement and personal enjoyment. Choosing New York University requires careful consideration by students and parents. For those who find it a good match New York University may well hold the key to a very bright future indeed.
