Since some Yorkies are on the small side (they weigh 3 to 5 pound dogs at maturity), they wouldn't make a good pet around younger children. They could easily be injured if dropped, stepped on, or if someone or something fell on your Yorkie. As with anything you would need to exercise good judgment and supervision around children.
They don't shed. Their hair is similar to human hair and they don't have an undercoat. They do require a lot of brushing so that their hair does not become a tangled matted mess. They also require much more frequent bathing than other dogs. I usually bath my Yorkie at least once a week.
Because they have a coat that is similar to human hair many people with allergies are able to be around Yorkies without having an allergic reaction. It's also nice not getting dog or cat hair all over your furniture and clothes.
You will also have to pay close attention to their eyes and ears. They tend to have so much hair on their face that it can get in their eyes and cause watering. You will need to wash around their eyes a couple of times a day. You certainly don't want your Yorkie to get an eye invection.
If you don't like to do all the grooming yourself, you can take your Yorkie and have him/her professionally groomed. Groomers will make sure there are no mats in their hair, give them a trim, a bath, check their ears, trim their nails, and express their anal glands. I usually take my Yorkie to the groomer a couple of times a year. In between times I do her grooming myself. I don't mind trimming hair, cutting nails, and brushing, etc.
When we first brought our Yorkie home as a puppy she thought she was the boss and would try to nip at us and tell us what to do. She even tried to bully her veterinarian, but learned that wasn't a smart thing to do. The Vet showed her what her place was in the hierarchy of things and showed me how to teach her that she needed to have manners and not be aggressive. At that time the Vet said she was going through her terrible twos.
People have a tendency to smile when they see the Yorkie because they are so cute. I enjoy the reaction that people have to my Yorkie. It's nice when something in this world can make you smile without much effort.
If you are thinking about a pet, consider the Yorkie. They get along well with just about everyone including other pets. Plus they will make you laugh and smile with their antics.

Post a CommentCute! Yours looks a lot like my Maltese-Yorkie.
I'd like to get a Yorkie one day. I've known people who have them. I have to wait until my girls are older though. No small dogs for now!
It may be that since Yorkies are bathed quite often that this helps keep dander down and that people with allergies have less reaction to them. I read somewhere that bathing a pet does help to reduce the amount of dander.
I had heard the same thing about this breed in relation to allergies, so I asked my allergist who told me it wasn't the hair that caused the allergy; it was the dander, and Yorkies have dander just like other dogs. Yours is absolutely adorable.
What a beautiful pet!
Great reasons, I love terriers.
They are very cute little dogs, and it is wonderful that they don't shed, esp. for allergies' sake.
Interesting. I didn't know that they don't shed. Very informative. :-)
Sweet, smart little dogs.
I love Yorkies, they are adorable!
