Why I Chose Abeka Homeschool Curriculum

Choosing a homeschool curriculum can be confusing with so many different kinds to choose from. If I had to pick my number one reason for choosing Abeka, it would be because it's a complete system without obvious educational gaps. The convenience of a complete homeschool curriculum straight out of the box was another reason. Following is a list of my pros and cons that will help you decide if Abeka is right for you and your child.

Abeka Pros

Homeschooling with Abeka takes the guesswork out of what to teach each day.

Included are teaching games, tips and several charts, such as vowels, calendars and numbers.

This homeschool curriculum successfully teaches through gentle, daily repetition and fun.

The workbook pages are colorful. My daughter asks when she will get her next workbook page.

I am drawn toward things like this homeschool curriculum that are scheduled and predictable.

Abeka Cons

The repetition could be boring for some children.

The crafts book is colorful and fun but not enough to have a craft each day of the school year.

Abeka seems to be a little advanced. My daughter started learning how to spell simple words today, six weeks into kindergarten.

It's a workbook-oriented curriculum. Some kids would rather have their teeth pulled than do workbook pages.

It's one of the more expensive homeschool curriculums. I didn't purchase the entire package but my cost was still around $550.00. Buying everything Abeka recommends would easily cost $900.00.

I purchased everything new but used homeschool curriculum can be found on Ebay. If you belong to a homeschool co-op, there's always a family that's outgrown curriculum who are usually happy to help other homeschoolers.

Abeka gives me confidence as a new homeschooling parent

Each night I review the lesson plans for the next day. If I need to make visuals I do it the night before. Because of the excellent lesson plans Abeka offers, I can relax and feel confident with what I'm teaching my daughter. My confidence is transferred to her. We can both enjoy the learning experience because I'm not worried I might be missing something she needs.

Each child is amazingly different in how they learn

Homeschooling parents who I have talked to have very strong reasons why they chose their homeschool curriculum. It really comes down to what works for you but more importantly what works for each child. One child might thrive with Abeka while another child is happier with a different homeschool curriculum, such as Five in a Row.

How is it easiest for your child to learn? A parent knows the answer to this, whether it's through hands on workbook like Abeka offers or a no workbook curriculum such as Five in a Row. Knowing my daughter, she wouldn't enjoy Five in a Row because she is that hands on child. My choice is working well for us but if that changes I wouldn't hesitate to find another homeschool curriculum.
