The reason why Christians are biblically allowed to participate in Halloween, but not Yoga, is because the origins of Yoga are still intact in Yoga classes. If these original elements are not present, then the class is merely exercise, not Yoga. If the class emphasizes "thinking on nothing," then it's Yoga; if not, it's exercise. The Scriptures constantly tell us to think on the things of God. Yoga is thus directlydisobedient to the Scriptures. Furthermore, seeking to escape this world even for a moment apart from the finished work of Christ (Yoga) is a false gospel.
If a Christian attends a Yoga class without trying to reach spiritual consciousness, without trying to think on nothing, or seeking to escape this world through human means, then No, it's not wrong; but, this is not Yoga, it's merely exercise. If Christians practice Yoga the same way Near Eastern Mystics do, then yes, it is spiritual and unbiblical.
One reality must be noted. If Christians are attending Yoga classes with non-Christians, then those present may think that you're participating in the false-gospel aspect of Yoga as well. Why not join another exercise class that doesn't pervert the gospel? If I'm doing Yoga with Non-Christians, whenever the instructor encourages us to "think on nothing," how will those present know that I'm being distinctly Christian by thinking on the truth of God? How can they see my thoughts? They can't; so, they will think that I believe in escaping this world through human means apart from the finished work of Christ because this is what defines Yoga, the spiritual aspect. If Christians want to bend themselves into pretzels, this is biblically permitted; but, this is not the essence of Yoga. The essence is spiritual, and the original physical positions were meant to help this reality. The physical positions however divorced from the spiritual emphases are merely exercise.
So, if you're bending yourself into a pretzel apart from participating in the spiritual aspects of Yoga, you are not participating in Yoga. So, don't call it Yoga; call it exercise. Yoga is not truly Yoga without the spiritual aspects involved. Whenever Al Mohler comes against Yoga, he's speaking about the spiritual aspects, not the physical positions.
Concerning Halloween, if Halloween's origins were still intact today, I could somewhat see the argument against participating; but, what about Halloween is evil in and of itself? Yoga, in and of itself is evil. Halloween however, the date, and all the elements, the God-given creativity of humanity separated from the pagan worship, belonged to our God before they belonged to the Druids. We are simply returning the day to its original and rightful owner, the only God who exists: the Triune Christian God. October 31st was His long before humanity existed. On the other hand, the spiritual emphasis of Yoga has never belonged to our God. He is NOT the source.
Do you see the difference between participating in Yoga and participating in Halloween? What do you think?
