Why Christians Should Vote Democrat: Confessions of a Left-Wing "Conservative"

Since the Reagan era of the 1980's, preachers, pastors, and priests have been encouraging--sometimes even threatening--their congregations to vote Republican. Why is that exactly? The reason is simple--Roe V. Wade... Christian Republicans have become the backbone of the party; no nominee can expect to win without them, as Rudy Guliani is quickly finding out. Ask any convicted Christian Republican why they vote as they do, and you will find one universal answer-the Republican party is overwhelmingly Pro-Life. It is very difficult to find out which came first: were Republicans Pro-Life, and so attracted the Christian vote; or were Christians Pro-Life, and therefore swayed the Republican party? While this may be the essence of this political issue, it is one that may never be answered with honesty. So, here is my confession: I am a Christian, I am Pro-Life, and I am a Democrat.

But, how can that be? Simple-I see the beauty of all life, including the animal life, the natural environment, the lives of the poor, the disenfranchised, and yes, even the Islamic... How can I honestly say that I am protecting God's creation when I am empowering those who would ruthlessly murder innocent people who happen to live in a part of the world that our nation is occupying? Or, would continue to support policies that continuously deteriorate our earth? Or, would point their fingers at a woman who is struggling with the most heart-wrenching decision of her life and call her a killer and tell her God hates her? Is this Christian compassion? My conscience tells me no. My conscience tells me to work with all of the energy I have to make this world a reflection of God's glory-and I mean the world, not just the United States. God's love for mankind knows no political or national boundaries.

So, in this elections, like all of the others, I will sit in church and listen to my fellow Christians renew their commitment to elect "the moral Republicans", while I quietly try to share my point of view with conviction AND reason. I am not ashamed to vote Democrat, and I will share my political opinions with anyone who cares to discuss them with me. I only ask for the respect and understanding of my own political opinions, in the same way I give them to those who speak so loudly as the supposed "voice" of all "true" Christians. I know, in the end, we all are doing our best to understand how God's will translates to politics; we are all just moving in a different direction.

    Steve and Nate...it is because of self-righteous neanderthals like yourselves that I don't go to church. And unless I am mistaken, if you cause someone to turn away from God, then you are responsible for that lost soul. How easy for you to make a judgment when you don't ever have to worry about making that choice because you are a man and can't get pregnant, whether by rape or a bad decision. Btw, true followers of Christ give up their worldly possessions and live as missionaries, something I doubt either of you do. Smoke that in your pipes.

    Judge not, least ye be judged. Why is it that America only has two political parties that have a chance??? We have a 100 choices for breakfast cereal and 2 for President of the US. That IMHO is a huge problem. I am a Christian (but I guess a phony one) and don't feel that either party represents my interests.

    We are like God, but God is not like us.
    God knows me and you think you know me.

    I really hate it when people say that only the conservative Republican people of this country are real Christians (as if that's something they have a right to judge) when 85% or so of the country is Christian and only (very roughly) 50% of the population are Conservative - and not all Conservatives are Christian. I'd wager a good half of American Christians believe as you do. This is a great article. It's great to put it out there that most Christians are not out there trying to take over the government and make it a nationalist theocratic empire.

    Right wing Christians are just the latest version of the right wing slave owners, right wing Jim Crow nation, and now right wing Republican Party! They can no longer execute the first two (although they fought to keep these evils and still go to church!), now they are relegated to right wing politics. That will also be dismantled!

    Another group of phony Christians....A Christian is a follower of Jesus Christ.....It's not about what you think. It is about what HE says. HE says "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God." in 1 Corinthians 6:9.....God is always merciful because HE doesn't give us what we deserve. HE is always giving grace because he gives us what we didn't deserve because of our disobedience. The Christian message is repentance. Jesus did NOT heal everyone, nor did he make everyone rich in money. We show Jesus' love to bring the unbeliever to repentence not so they can wallow in their sin. That's why a Democrat will always be a poor Christian because the basic theme of the Democratic party is that everything is okay.

    ...carrying this reminder of her trauma? Absolutely not. It is a heart breaking situation, but does it seem reasonable to kill the baby? WOW...hard to believe we have come to that. We are somehow able to forget that it truly is a living baby made in the likeness of God.

    Ms. Hall, my intention here is not to insult you or offend you. My intent is to defend God, the true God. The God of Abraham and not to let us be deceived into thinking we can turn Him into what we want Him to be at a given time. I am guilty of this too. I pray that God would reveal Himself to you and that you would lay yourself down and seek God's wisdom in your life. Bless you Ms. Hall..

    Isn't it sad that people continue to turn God into something that He is not? Something more fitting to their own desires.

    The question was asked.."Is this Christian Compassion?"..Your confusion is that Christian's believe God hates the mother who aborts her child. The truth is God loves that mother, but hates the sin.

    If you are walking in truth, you will discover that there is a time for both tolerance and intolerance. Jesus was a compassionate man, however not always tolerant. John 2:14 describes an example of his intolerance. Christ was very clear on many topics including abortion and homosexuality.

    Do I think there are many sad situations that leave young girls pregnant? Yes. Often the example of a teenage girl who is raped is given as an acceptable reason for abortion. Do I think that the we should kill the baby conceived in such a horrific circumstance? No. I think we should kill the rapist. Am I naive to think that it would be easy for this young girl to go 9 months

    It is a sad commentary that we have a government that allows such blatantly political "churches" keep their tax-free status. I must admit, I laughed at your statement "ask any convicted christian republican" Like say, Scooter Libby, or (soon) Tom Delay, Tom Foley, and if there is a god- one day, Bush and Cheney? That aside, a very good and insightful article...
