Why Are Churches Operating like Businesses?

These days it seems as if there is a church on every corner. The television networks have become as overwhelmed with religious programming that there are several stations where those are the only types of programs shown. As I watch all of these great things transpire I wonder are the churches slowly getting away from its purpose?

As a boy I recall having had to attend church on a regular basis. My church attendance was not a debatable issue with my parents. During this time church was a place where you could both have your soul uplifted and receive spiritual edification. Now it seems like the church has evolved into something far from that. It is no longer a place dedicated to saving lost souls but now operates more like a business.

There is no doubt that the church does have its share of financial obligation but that still does not justify the openly discussed fiduciary matters that are discussed in its sacred sanctum. Unlike many places churches are considered to operate on sovereign land therefore they are not required to pay taxes. The main topic of discussion is always issues revolving around money. I have attended many different churches where the sermon was about "getting your finances right." Is there really a need to have items such as automatic teller machines and credit card machines in church lobbies? Is it mandatory that offerings in church be taken up three times during the service? If a church congregation is small is there a need for church expansion? I personally think that it is a bad idea to spend millions of dollars of church members' money constructing mega churches when there is an adjacent community falling apart. Instead of these churches trying to operate like corporations they should follow their missions such as; honoring God, helping the community, and caring for the needy.

Churches have gotten away from their true purpose. Although it has lots of business that has to be taken care of, yet it should not operate as a business. It is a place of worship that should be focused more on saving lost souls through spiritual upliftment.
