Why Do the Cleveland Browns Keep Losing?

Larry Allen
The Cleveland Browns have a long way to go before they will be thought of as a competitive football team. The offensive line misses key blocks allowing the defense to reach the quarterback. The quarterback throws the ball consistently to high or behind the receivers resulting in many incomplete passes and throw a ways. The defense spends the majority of each game on the field therefore by the second half they are exhausted.

The offensive line for the Browns is very unreliable. They miss blocking assignments and commit a lot of penalties throughout the course of a game. The running backs need the line to be effective in opening running lanes in order to be productive. The quarterback has to have time to set his feet and scan the field to be able to deliver an accurate pass to the wide receivers. All of these things are dependent on the offensive line witch is playing way below expectations. Without a strong offensive line it will be very hard for Cleveland to mount any type of offense.

The quarterback, Brady Quinn, was the number one draft pick four years ago. Many believed him to be the franchise player the Browns were looking for. Quinn has not played up to par so far this season. He has had four years to get his feet under him and learn the offense. He still performs like a rookie, throwing the ball with no accuracy or timing. In order for the Browns to be successful on offense Quinn will need to step up and be the leader he was drafted to be.

On defense the Browns are among the top teams in the league. They defend the run with great pursuit and amazing tackles. The defensive line applies consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks resulting in a lot of turn overs and bad passes. The linebackers and defensive backs are well disciplined and perform at a high level against the run or the pass. The defense spends two thirds of the game on the field yet only allow the opposing team to score an average of 23 points a game. That's 40 minutes a game on the field. At 23 points a game they are only allowing a touchdown every 13 minutes. This is a pretty good feat considering that is only 7 minutes short from the opposing defenses entire game. The Browns defense is playing exceptionally well and have nothing to be ashamed of.

The only way the Browns will be successful is for the offense to play at the same level as the defense. The o-line needs to be more disciplined and aware on every snap. The quarterback needs to make better decisions with the football and throw the ball with some accuracy and timing. The defense needs to spend more time on the sideline and less time on the field. These are the things they must do if they ever expect to be successful.

Always kind of liked the Browns a bit. I think they just need a new coaching staff.
