Why a College Minor is Just as Important as a Major

College classes are beginning and many incoming freshmen have their eyes on a set major. As an after thought, many add a second area of study. Some students try to align their major with a minor area of study. For example, a student might major in business with a minor in accounting. In the field of education, they might align a major in physical education with a minor in health ed. This article looks at the importance of a secondary degree.

Many students like to follow their hearts desire in a profession. However, once they are committed, it can be tough to make a change. I have seen students in the field of teachers education do their student teaching and discover, that they have selected the wrong field. I have seen students get majors in political science and discover that the competition for a job is too hard. These types of individuals have spent thousands of dollars on an education and now they are left out.

However, a wise choice of a secondary degree can save the day. So how does a college student decide what should be their secondary degree? I can't select one for you, but I can give you some thoughts for consideration.

Select an Area of Real Interest
If you have a particular area that you have always had a strong interest in, you could be on the right track. It could be as simple as area that you already have experience in.

Job availability
Select an area that is begging for help. You might not enjoy this area but, you know that you can get a job in it.

Diversify
I got a degree in Drivers Education. Besides teaching in high school, I could use this minor to do remedial work with Senior Citizens. A business minor could help you start your own business if you can't find employment after graduation. Always think outside the box, when it comes to a minor.

Prepare to carry yourself
Don't count on outside employment. Shape your minor so that you can start up yourself in your major area of interest. If you are in elementary education, shape your degree to start a childcare business.

Consider your Minor just as important as your Major
Just assume that you will have to use your minor area before stepping into your major area.

Finally check the field
If your major area is over crowded, make sure your minor area is strong enough to support you and your future endeavors. Select a minor area that you would be happy in.
