Robin Raven
When it comes to fitting college in with a busy life, sometimes part-time study seems like your only choice. Luckily, it is a wise one. There are many benefits to being a part-time student. The main reason that students opt to limit their classes and campus time per semester is because of outside responsibilities, be it from family, work or other financial obligations. While only going to college part-time means that you will be a college student for longer, that also means that you continue to reap the rewards of being a student for longer as well. You will delight in many benefits of going to college part-time.

Financial Benefits

When you are a part-time student, you still are able to receive financial aid each semester, as long as you are taking a certain amount of classes. You have the benefit of meetings new friends in college, without spending as much time in the classroom. You are able to work full-time, while studying on a part-time basis. This enables you to be able to support your lifestyle and sometimes helps you avoid taking out loans altogether.

Many students opt for part-time study for a longer amount of time to avoid going into debt while studying all at once. By spreading out tution costs over a couple of more years than the traditional, full-time college student, an education that may seem beyond reach can suddenly be attainable. Speak to your school's financial aid office for advice, but keep in mind that schools sometimes prefer full-time students. Make sure the advice you receive is from an objective source. Part-time study is not for everyone, but it is a smart choice for getting started in school, when you may otherwise have to postpone your studies. That is another benefit of going to college part-time.Career Incentives of Part-time Study

Many employers often match the amount that one spends on their education or offer tuition incentives; part-time study allows you to be fully dedicated to that employer, while also benefitting from the educational opportunities. You do not have to worry about others climbing ahead of you on the corporate or career ladder, while you have your nose in the books. Likewise, you don't have to worry that others are improving their chances of later advancement in the company through their education. You get the best of both worlds, having your hands in both areas of improving your career. You will have the advantage in both areas.

Not having to take a hiatus from your work responsibilities in order to reach higher in your career will really ricochet in benefits for your career. Although combining part-time study will full-time work will really test the limits of your scheduling capabilities and time spent with family and friends, it is often the best choice for those on a clearly set career path.

Unexpected Benefits

There are certain perks for college students that many part-time students do not anticipate as well, including discounts at movies, entertainment options, stores and restaurants. All of these are granted to part-time students, too. Your student ID can open all kinds of doors, including free admission for museums and cultural activities. While hardly a deciding factor, going to school for part-time means that you can enjoy these perks for longer.
