Why Couples Should Communicate

Julie Michael
Of course most people would want to communicate with your partner. If you didn't want to communicate with your partner, why have a partner in the first place?

The problem isn't with people wanting to communicate or not wanting to communicate with their partner. The real problems in a relationship and communication break-down occurs because most people have no clue how to communicate effectively with their partner.

True communication with your partner is absolutely essential to having a strong, healthy relationship with your partner that will withstand the test of time. If neither partner is communicating, misunderstandings can occur that will damage a relationship beyond repair. And if you've made the mistake of not communicating and find your relationship in trouble due to a lack of communication, this is the time to start communicating.

Most people would want to communicate with their partners to be able to make sure they are understood by their partners, but there's another reason why one would find it necessary to communicate effectively with their partner. If you are able to communicate with your partner, your own needs and desires, then you will better be able to better hear and understand them. When we are able to communicate our needs, desires and feelings- this leaves us far more receptive to hearing the other person and accept what they are saying to us.

Both partners in a relationship should want to communicate effectively, because if there is no real communication, the relationship stands on a flimsy foundation that will collapse at the first sign of major trouble. However, good communication skills don't happen overnight. Good communication takes time and patience on both sides.

If you and your partner are working on your communication skills, there are a few things to remember. Don't become discouraged if you or your partner either one fall back into old communication habits- practice makes perfect. It may be necessary to go to couple's counseling together for awhile to help you both deal with the major "invisible issues" in your relationship, or use a mediator if you find yourselves in a major disagreement with no end in sight.

Both partners in a relationship should desire to communicate effectively. They should also be ready and willing to do whatever it takes to make one another feel comfortable or "safe" with discussing any issues in the relationship. Both partners should want to communicate with each other- they should be willing to listen to one another, actually HEAR and understand what the other is saying, and be willing to do whatever it takes to work on problems.

Sometimes a compromise is the best way to go when there are problems to be worked out, but without good communication between partners, it's impossible to compromise. Ideally, both partners would want to communicate with each other because of a mutual love, respect and trust for one another- both in the relationship and as individuals.

I absolutely agree. I find it ironic that we don't consider communication skills as important as learning how to do math or read. Good communication is an art and one that can be improved with practice.
