Why the Craze with Gluten?

C. Nagel
Gluten intolerance is everywhere nowadays. When magazines aren't talking about it, your relatives are. I hear it everyday, and before gluten, it was lactose. Why has gluten now become so popular? Is it just health food shops trying to sell that disgusting gluten-free bread?

Actually, gluten intolerance is a very common condition that effects more people than you would think. The fad with gluten at the moment is great for social awareness and it has cured many people of illnesses they have had their whole lives and just figured was incurable. Hundreds of men and women have literally been healed overnight by entirely omitting gluten from their diets, and science can prove that its not something to be taken lightly.

Gluten is a type of protein that is commonly found in grains such as wheat, rye, oats and barley. It is the ingredient that gives bread that chewy texture and shape and helps in many other important ways to produce numerous foods. Gluten is in almost everything you find at the grocery store, and this minute protein packs quite a punch to the human body. Most people with gluten intolerances suffer predominantly from abdominal bloating, diarrhoea, flatulence and intestinal cramps. But, if you don't get these general warnings signs from eating gluten it doesn't mean you aren't effected by it. Gluten not only effects the digestive system but can also cause adverse reactions in adults such as cancer, depression, chronic fatigue, obesity and more.

The effects gluten causes are the most easy to notice in children. Don't you hate tantrums? Some of the most common of conditions seen in children are obesity, epilepsy, anemia, eczema, and lots of other rashes, and, tantrums. It is amazing that one ingredient can bring on so many health risks but gluten has been infamous among health-freaks for years. Most likely because of the obesity factor.

As I mentioned before, gluten can not only effect you physically but, just as importantly, your well-being is exposed. People who consider themselves free of any detriments to their health have gone off gluten and noticed a dramatic change in their well-being. Depression is very common in people who are being effected by gluten but many other psychological infirmities are a by-product of consuming gluten, including mood-swings and an inability to thrive, which also stunts the social skills for children aswell.

Ignoring your reactions to gluten can be fatal. As I said before, people put down their ailments to other things. But, gluten is extremely common for going under the radar and you'd be surprised by how many things can change in you physically after going gluten-free. Stop taking gluten entirely and the body will feel much more different- it will feel better.

So it isn't hard to see how gluten is a hot topic at present, but why wasn't if before? Hopefully now people can find some other reason to why they haven't been feeling %100, it could just be that little protein, gluten. If you think you may be suffering from any of these conditions above, maybe that irritable bowel problem or rash you've been enduring all your life will disappear after eliminating gluten from your diet.
